I looked it up and their scoring isn't really all that hot. They score enough goals to win, they simply give up too much. It's been nice to see Ty Conklin have success down there. I don't know if the Wings plan on calling him up when rosters expand. He's clearly helping the Griffins win hockey games. My guess is once they are mathematically eliminated he will be brought back up.
It just goes to show how terrible our goaltending depth is in the organization. We will need to sign a journeyman low caliber NHL guy and let him split time with McCollum and serve as the #3 goaltender in Detroit. If Conks wants to keep playing you might be able to convince him to switch roles with Joey Mac as he's unlikely to get another NHL gig.
If anyone is still holding out hope on McCollum he's still got a long way to go. Another factor is that Petr Mrazek will be on the Griffs next year. If it was my call I'd sign a journeyman, make McCollum the #2 to start the season and slowly work Mrazek into the rotation. The goal would be to have Mrazek as your #2 in very short order and have him take over the #1 spot either late next year or the following season.
I think whoever they bring in to split time in GR next year will be splitting it with Mrazek, not McCollum. McCollum hasn't been able to stop a beach ball in the AHL. If they bring in Mrazek and he's even remotely decent as a pro, they'll want to keep him in GR and McCollum will have to go back to Toledo and keep trying there.
At some point, at some level, you have to stop the puck. That's the challenge for McCollum.
How has Ferraro been playing down there? I know he had a rough season in Everett after leaving Red Deer, has he shown any improvement?
Hes made himself look like a decent prospect again, Im starting to think it really was just injury that screwed him in the WHL.

He is a useful player and will have time to develop, but I think people hyping him as a great fighter are getting a little carried away. A willing combatant? Absolutely, but he is not going to be a feared fighter and with his size that was unlikely anyway. Just think people think he is the second coming of Kocer or something by the way people go on and on about him in the fighting department. Not accurate from what I have seen in GR this season.
Hes a VERY good pound for pound fighter. He only lost about 4 or 5 fights his entire time in the WHL. But like everything, as a rookie hes adjusting to taking on big guys who are seasoned PRO fighters a lot of the time.
Give him three years to bulk up and get stronger and youll see. He'll probably end up like Dorsett except a better fighter
Kenny Holland is there too as he will call someone up after the game, so you'd think Gus would have the inside running right now.
My guess is Bert will be out tomorrow, so I expect Nyquist to get the call directly in to the top 6. Tatar has not been overly impressive this game, he needs to shoot the puck more.

Can't split up the top line, so what do the others look like?
The third line has been clicking, but that second line looks really sick.
I think Franzen and Cleary will swap places if they put Nyquist that far up. But who are we kidding Babcock will probably toss Homer up the lines for a game, even if they call up Nyquist.
Beating a very good team 3-1 after 2. Brunnstrom scored the third goal on a pretty dangle. Not that anyone will care but Conklin is starting to look very good as he is shaking off the rust and playing more. He looks stronger than MacDonald did at any point down in GR. Joey keeps winning in Detroit so it doesn't really matter, but Conklin just might put GR into the playoffs if he keeps playing like this and that will be great for our guys development and a lot of people will have to eat some of their words about just how terrible of an organizational move that was.
Chris Conner got the call up from grand rapids i assume its because Gustav Nyquist is to important to GR while they are scrambling to make a playoff spot.

Dude I totally broke that **** down earlier today!
Nyquist just scored a beauty in the Griffins game. So much talent it is ridiculous, silky hands.
Yep, guy is ticketed for the top 6 as soon as he's given a chance in Detroit. We've got some really fantastic talent headed to Detroit in the next year with Smith and Nyquist.

Each Clear Day roster consists of a maximum of 22 players. According to AHL by-laws, only those players listed on a team’s Clear Day roster are eligible to compete in the remainder of the 2011-12 AHL regular season and in the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs, unless emergency conditions arise as a result of recall, injury or suspension.
Teams may also add signed draft choices and players signed to amateur tryout contracts, provided that their respective junior or college seasons are complete.
Quick look shows at least no McCollum or Coetzee on the list.
No other way around it. He should have been knocking on the door for a backup spot on the wings by now.
yep
i'm usually pretty slow to call prospects busts but....it really says something when a 22 year old former first round pick isn't even wanted on his AHL teams roster for the end of the season and the Playoffs if they make it

I hurt inside. One day I'll change my avatar but not today.
Awesome. As much as we bag on some of our prospects, this is still pretty damn impressive:

Nine Grand Rapids alumni were a part of Detroit's 2008 Stanley Cup, and 15 current or former Griffins played a part in the Red Wings’ recent NHL record-breaking 23-game home winning streak.
In all, 19 of the 30 players who’ve skated for the parent club this season are former or current Griffins, and 12 Detroit regulars logged at least one complete season in Grand Rapids before earning a full-time job with the Red Wings: Jimmy Howard, Joey MacDonald, Jonathan Ericsson, Jakub Kindl, Niklas Kronwall, Kyle Quincey, Justin Abdelkader, Cory Emmerton, Valtteri Filppula, Darren Helm, Jiri Hudler and Jan Mursak.

Well, he's a bust as far as the draft pick goes. But you never know with goaltenders, they might aswell blossom when they're 27. Or 30. Sometimes a change of scenery is all that it takes.
Anyway the Griffins are hanging in there. 6 points up to the #8 spot with three games in hand. Win at east 2 of the next 3 and they're right in it. Haven't caught a game recently but they seem to score in bunches. 7-2-1 in the last 10.
