At least it was against the AHL's best team after throttling them the previous night. Not necessarily a "good" loss, especially with so many opportunities, but it's not really a bad one either.
Checkers lose 2-1 in OT. Apparently, Peters was crashed into and then the puck went into the net. Refs conferenced, ruled it a good goal. The 3rd OT loss for the Checkers in 3 games.
I don't think this has been mentioned elsewhere, but the Checkers released their Clear Day roster a few days ago. This is the group of 22 players they are allowed to use until the end of the playoffs, barring emergency circumstances due to callup or injury. It's a fairly important strategic issue for AHL teams to determine who to include on this list.
Quote:
Mike Murphy (G)
Justin Peters (G)
Brett Bellemore
Nicolas Blanchard Drayson Bowman
Zach Boychuk
Evgenii Dadonov
Zac Dalpe
Sean Dolan
Chris Durno
A.J. Jenks
Michal Jordan
Justin Krueger
Riley Nash
Matthew Pistilli
Rasmus Rissanen
Mathieu Roy Jerome Samson
Bobby Sanguinetti
Justin Soryal
Brett Sutter
Chris Terry
Note that they left room for at least the possibility of Bowman and Samson being sent back down before the end of the season, implying those guys are still playing for jobs between now and Game 82.
I believe Branecky mentioned about the probable inclusion of guys like Murphy, Rask and Dumoulin joining after their seasons are over. Not sure how that factors into this.

Juniors and college players don't apply -- this list is only for pros. So the players noted above can join as long as their seasons are complete.
I'm most interested in how they handle Murphy if Kitchener gets bumped in the first round. Surely they'll want him to go ahead and play some pro games if he's available. The Checkers are pretty much locked into a playoff berth so I'd imagine he'll get some playoff games there in April, but there's a possibility he could get a look up here in the meantime.
The rules around junior callups are a little fuzzy to me -- I know he would be limited to 9 pro games in total, and I'm pretty sure he's eligible to play with either the Canes or Checkers. I'll be interesting to see what decisions are made... again assuming Kitchener doesn't simply win their first playoff round.
Checkers are getting stomped right now. 7-1 after two. Following their last couple games, they've got a major problem with confidence. They start out the game great, then something goes wrong and it all builds from there.
A loss today brings them to 10th place after leading their division not to long ago.

Ouch. If they fail to make the playoffs, I wonder how this poor 2nd half performance will (if at all) affect Daniels in terms of other teams looking at him for a coaching spot?
IIRC, some thought that he'd be at least considered for openings that come up in the next 2 years, no?
I guess it depends on how much opposing teams are watching the games before deciding to possibly hire him or if they're simply watching the standings.
From a pure standings point of view, it has to hurt his chances. A collapse like the one Charlotte's gone through, some blame has to fall on the coach for not being able to right the ship.
Watching the games though, I'm not sure how much is Daniels' fault. The team always comes out really well. In this most recent game, they dominated from the puck drop, outshooting the Heat 8-0 at one point. Nothing went in, the Heat convert on the powerplay and then the players starting panicking and making stupid mistakes. Since that 8-0 run, the Checkers have been outshot 37 to 12.
The problem appears to be teamwide as well. The forwards are forcing shots, the defense is out of the position and the goaltenders are letting in some weak goals. No one has any confidence in their play right now.

Yeah. I guess one could interpret it how ever they want. When the are on the ice, it's on the players to perform. But if the whole team is acting like this with no confidence, then some could argue that coach is as fault as well.
Anyhow, will be interesting to see how it plays out.
