And you know Patty's squeezing the stick because he fired it right into the goalie's chest. He had about 1/3rd of the goal on the left to fire but he took the conservative route and it wound up right into the goalie's chest.
Yeah, we probably all underestimated the amount of time it'd take for all these new pieces to gel. The optimist wouldn't mind seeing this team get next year to really show they've come together.
I simply believe that this team would do better next year than they have this year if they were roughly the same team they are now.
Here's a team that I'd feel good about going into next year: Note that there aren't any drastic changes or Suter/Parise signings. David Jones would be someone I'd want to sign, but I consider even that a stretch with our FA record. This current lineup would require the cap to go up just 1 mil. Also, I don't have D Jones in there, but if we did sign him it would make things tight with the cap unless it does go up to ~67mil. In that case I wouldn't bring back Torrey Mitchel and push Wingels down to the 4th.
FORWARDS

Daniel Winnik ($1.800m) / T.J. Galiardi ($0.800m) / Tommy Wingels ($0.875m)
Brad Winchester ($0.725m) / Andrew Desjardins ($0.540m) / Torrey Mitchell ($0.900m)
Michal Handzus ($2.500m)
DEFENSEMEN
Douglas Murray ($2.500m) / Dan Boyle ($6.666m)
Marc-Edouard Vlasic ($3.100m) / Brent Burns ($5.760m)
Justin Braun ($0.875m) / Brad Stuart ($3.400m)

(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $65,800,000; CAP PAYROLL: $65,479,167; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $320,833
Maybe I'm seeing things differently but sometimes it almost feels like Marleau and Thornton are trying to everything themselves and win games by themselves. Maybe not but if they are that usually means they don't believe in the rest of the team?
Is it me or does Niemi scare the crap out of me as a goalie? Anyway we can get a solid goalie at the draft or any other goalie July 1st?
I was hoping we'd at least make a pitch for the likes of Harding at the trade window as, from what we've seen, I think that Greiss scares me more if we make the playoffs and for some reason, have to rely on him for a few games. Plus, to me I think Niemi has to be pressured with some competition and, Greiss has proven to be very little.

Absolutely on the money here. That is what was extremely frustrating last night.

What happened to the Bruins the year before they won the cup? They historically failed and lost in historical fashion.
I'm frustrated as hell with this team, but ever since the beginning of the season I have been looking forward to NEXT season - as that IMO is the epitome of our last good chance at winning the cup with this core.
Sharks management unfortunately has a pattern where they seem to make a big trade/move each year.
09 they brought in Boyle/Blake. 10 they added Heatley. 11 Niemi. 12 Heatley out, Havlat in, Burns in, Seto out.
I'd frankly just like to simply see TWO YEARS IN A ROW of the same core be able to play together. But that's just me. Enough with the huge moves - they aren't helping things.
So with you here. Tell me the likes of Seto and Wellwood wouldn't look good on this squad still right now? Add McGinn back in there with them and man, that is a pretty solid 3rd line right there and, all for decent money. Some churn is necessary, adding parts here and there but, far too many changes. (although, disposing of Heatley was a good thing).

No we're not burning through those ... we have the same 2 games in hand that we had before the roadie.
we may have those same 2 games in hand compared to most of the teams, but now we're 5 spots back of where we used to be in the conference and 3 points behind the leading team in our division.
this is going to be a really epic end of the season for our entire division. more so than it was last season IMO.

Right but it's not because of our games in hand because we haven't played them yet.
won't matter how many games we have in hand if we keep losing. The rest of the month, is almost every other day against teams that are fighting for a spot, making those games 4 pt swing games.
Which is an unsustainable pace. Dallas is on a tear, Colorado is on a tear, LA is finding ways to win, even Calgary, Minnesota, and Anaheim continue to get points in games. Our getting games to OT or a SO does not success make. If Phoenix loses their next game and we win ours we'll be in 7th, but far from out of hot water.
I'm not at all counting out a post-season, just trying to be realistic.
I keep seeing Stuart mentioned around here. Is something up I don't know about?
Detroit's not gonna let him go, are they?
I don't have a source at the moment, but apparently he's expressed that he'd like to come to San Jose because of his family.
Edit: Here we go:
Quote:
Stuart will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. The Red Wings approached him about extending his contract, but he said he will decide on his future after the season.
The club is not optimistic he will return.
Stuart's family lives in San Jose and can't relocate for personal reasons, forcing the defenseman to make long commutes a few times during breaks in the schedule. He might seek a deal with a team closer to home.

Stuart, 32, becomes a free agent at the end of this season and his wife and kids have continued to live in San Jose.
I wanted to make a couple calls on my own before using that information, but before that could happen, Ansar Khan of MLive.com and Booth Newspapers had an item today that Stuart indeed is hinting broadly that he might not re-sign with the Red Wings because of the distance from his family in San Jose.
“It is going to be a tough decision,” Stuart told Khan. “It’s not going to be all based on hockey and what I want for my career. It’s going to be a little bit (about) family, which is important. Those are things I still have to kind of sort out, try to figure out what’s going to be best for everyone.”
This one's probably the most in depth from the Wings side since it's a scout who's speaking on record. Basically, saying Wings got Quincey since they know Stuart's (likely) a goner.
According to this Wings scout, sounds like it's pretty certain Brad's moving back to California.

I like it! We definitely get better with him in line-up...
IMO he's better than Murray - more expensive, but better. Would add even more physicality to our lineup - I'd love to see them both play on our team at the same time, and Stuart is faster.
