Canucks Selke Trophy

If the season were to end right now who would win the best defensive forward on the Canucks out of Kesler or Burrows?/other?

imo Burrows would win it, and to think boldly imo he could be in the top 10 as one of the NHL's best defensive forwards, being a beast on the pk while scoring 23 goals so far.

Burrows is also trending down in pim's. link

Quote:
Coach Alain Vigneault said Burrows -- who plays on the power play and kills penalties -- is doing a good job of avoiding scrums after the whistle.

"The only thing we talked about since last year with Alex was to try to focus on playing whistle to whistle," said Vigneault. "Play assertive but play whistle to whistle. He does that and he tries to be disciplined at the same time."

Burrows is good but I think AV gives Kesler the harder match ups when he can.

Plus Burrows is shutting down from the wing and is mainly defensive on the PK.

Kesler is shutting down from center and is defensive all game long.

Not to say Burrows isn't covering for the Sedins, cause he is, just to a lesser extent.

I'd also put Hansen above Burrows (Kes > Hansen > Burrows) on that defensive forward chart.

Hansen wins the most unlikely of puck battles, checks ridiculously hard at both ends of the rink and is noticeable every shift from a defensive perspective.

Makes me sorta wish we could find a suitable winger for the Sedins so that the Burrows and Kesler chemistry could flourish a bit. The two play well with one another. I think a line like Burrows Kesler Zach Attack could be interesting if Booth were to be bumped up to the number 1 for a bit.

I wish AV did some experimentation with the last few games. He has the opportunity and could see the kind of offense we produce before the playoffs.

Booth should NEVER play with the Sedins. Kassian with the Sedins makes way more sense if you want to break up the Sedin line - allowing Booth / Kesler / Burrows to play together.

Booth has tunnel vision. He'd be one of the worst guys to use in the Sedin line.

Burrows is not a centre it essentially takes him off from the race.

Difficult, not impossible. ~ Lehtinen won it a few times.

A few times like 3 years running I believe.
Break down TOI, shot blocks, and all that, I'd say Burrows could easily always been in talks for the Selke.

I would give it to Higgins. If not this, then at least the unsung hero award. Strongest, most consistent, and hardest working player on the team this year.

Award generally given (and nominated) for Centers. Besides Jere Lehtinen (who won it 3 times), there hasn't been a winger to win it in 20+ years. Remember awards are voted by the media and they probably consider FO% since all the top defensive forwards happen to be center (and most team play a system where the center has responsibility/coverage assignments). Unless AV decides to start doing winger traps like Dallas used to do, i doubt Burrows has much of a chance winning. He might get in the top 5 if he's lucky.

FWIW- I remember Burrows being in the top 10 a couple years ago. I think he was 9th overall or something. Obviously that's still a long way from winning it, but he's the only Canuck other than Kes who's gotten any recognition from voters in a long time. I think Lehtinen scored 30+ goals every time he won it, so having a good/great offensive season is a pre requisite.

I think Burrows can crack 30 goals this season no problem.

Nope... only 30+ the last time... 23, 20, 31.

Remember he played under ken hitchcock who's probably most famous for the winger trap. Lehtinen was a big part of that and probably the main reason he won. Besides him, its always center.

Also last season voting, Malhotra was 5th... voting results from last year (top 5)
1. Ryan Kesler, VAN 1,179 (105-14-5-2-0)
2. Jonathan Toews, CHI 476 (5-36-24-15-9)
3. Pavel Datsyuk, DET 348 (4-22-22-12-8)
4. Patrice Bergeron, BOS 296 (3-18-21-9-8)
5. Manny Malhotra, VAN 229 (6-10-10-14-7)

Burrows best result i think was in 2009 (11th)?

Pavel Datsyuk 945
Mike Richards 942
Ryan Kesler 290
Henrik Zetterberg 154
Mikko Koivu 154
David Krejci 109
Travis Zajac 89
Zach Parise 80
Patrick Marleau 64
Jamie Langenbrunner 58
Alex Burrows 35

Also note the Selke is one of the worst awards in terms voting. Its rarely won by someone in the west coast and generally won by players on Eastern or Central teams. When Pahlsson deserved the award (and was more or less the players choice), it was won by Rod Brind'Amour (Car). Kesler i believe is the only person on the west coast (as in PST) to win the award.

Last nights game against Dallas was not Selke worthy for Burrows.
