Ben Smith to have surgery for a hernia and right hip labral tear. Expected recovery time is 16 weeks.

http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=621200

This just hasn't been his year. Preseason concussion, lackluster NHL call-ups, and now this.

Hopefully he comes back stronger and harder next year. He oozes work ethic every time I see him play in Rockford.

The team defense was letting Crawford down far before he was letting the team down. Pointed it out so many times when they were winning earlier in the year. Crawford doesn't have much confidence at this point.. but he'd be fine at this point if the team wasn't so inconsistent infront of him.

Two goals in his brief stint on the non-scoring lines is pretty solid, especially to this now suddenly offensively-challenged team.

No Savior, no playoffs.

I think Crawford would be a smidge better. I think his save percentage might be around .910 this year if the defense was better.

Yet there are goalies with better numbers with no Keith's or Seabrook's in front of them.

Bottom line is Crawford had a bad year. It hasn't been so horrible that he doesn't deserve a shot next year. S. Bowman knows what he needs to do. Add a defenseman or add a goaltender. I say add a defenseman. Yet adding a goalie would not be wrong at all.

It's not about the defense, specifically.. it's the entire team. A total 5-man unit. Our team defense has been bad for way too much of the season.

You can give the goalies all the pass you want. The fact is, they have been bad. Bad bad bad bad bad.

We have the worst goaltending of any playoff team in the league. It's not our defense. Heck we're actually in the top half of the league when it comes to shots against. It's the goaltending.

Some of our forwards can't lay the body, and that translates into more work for the defense. Checking forwards slow things down. We have two forwards that are capable of being two way players. We need a TJ Oshie type of a player. The skill on this team is becoming its albatross.

Keith and Seabrook's defense wouldn't look nearly as bad if every mistake didn't end up in the net behind Crawford. Every team has defensive lapses, its just that other goalies bail their defensemen out on occasion. Crawford has been Marty Turco this year.

2 assists for Shalunov today in a 5-4 loss. Their season finishes tomorrow (missed the playoffs).
