Why would it be? My all-time favorite player is Felix Potvin he never suited up for Florida. A lot of my all-time favorites were long retired by time Florida came into the league.
It might only be an issue if you're a Canadiens fan and your all-time favorite is a Bruin or something but even then that's silly.
Right now, my current favourite player in the game is Steven Stamkos. He's a hometown boy, and probably could have been a Leaf had they tanked and fire saled the team in 2008 when things were going downhill. At some point they were bottom 5 or 3 or something but rallied to end up in 7th, where they moved up and drafted Luke Schenn instead. To me, he signifies a lot of what the Leafs rebuild could have been after Sundin retired had things worked out differently. To me, he represents what the Leafs rebuild could have been about, so in a weird way he has a connection to my favourite team, and I don't see a problem with it.

Don't remind me. I was hoping for some "indifferent" play as well. What happened instead? The guys who had no trade clauses (thanks John Ferguson Jr.) all of the sudden were scoring clutch goals and winning games when the team was too far out of reach. Now here we are in 2012 and once Florida makes the playoffs this year the Leafs will be the only team post lockout to never make the playoffs. Columbus? Check. Islanders? Check. Oilers? Check. Leafs? Nope. So yeah, Stamkos is looking pretty good right now.
Oh, to the original question Gretzky is my all-time favourite. And in my opinion I am a hockey fan first, THEN a Leaf fan. If you can't enjoy the other teams and stars in our league then you aren't a hockey fan
My all-time favorite player is Teemu Selanne. Not only did he not ever play for the Red Wings, he's had negative things to say about them more than a few times (although I think that's mostly an off-shoot of playing for the post-lockout Ducks than anything else).
um...I just picked my favourite team as the team my favourite player played on. Now that he and his successor are both retired, my fav. team is my hometown team, which was previously my second/third team.

I'd say that if I was a Leafs fan too.
Oh wait, I actually did used to say that (pre-Rocky)
And of course it is okay to like other players even if they are constantly sticking it to your team. I like Toews, Hossa and Joe sakic and Forsbetg but my team is always goung ti be the red wings of detroit.
No it's not especially when you're a fan of a relatively new team as I am. It'd be different if you where a Toronto fan and your favourite player of all time was Maurice Richard.
By the way my favourite player of all time is Mario Lemieux.

Kudos to the Ottawa Senators for the great season despite injuries to their 3 best players.
No. Many people might pick one of these guys as their favorite player: Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Mario Lemieux, Doug Harvey, Jean Beliveau, Eddie Shore, Raymond Bourque. If all those people only rooted for teams these guys played for, many teams would not have very many fans.
Saku Koivu before he got traded to the Ducks (which is cool because they gave Teemu his cup). I just hated the Habs back then, now I'm mostly indifferent.
When I was a kid my favorite player was Petr Stastny even though I was/am a Stars fan. My favorite player all-time is Modano but Stastny is second. My second favorite team was Quebec when I was a kid too.
