Your team instantly acquires one of these wingers for the rest of this season and the next 2 seasons, and after that they're definitely gone. Ignore contracts, both will be paid the same amount, and either one you get only for this year and the next 2 years. Who do you take?
this until at least next season, only thing Ovy's got going for him is that is he a monster playoff performer. He was once again the only caps forward to show up last year, regardless of his sub-par regular season.
Kovalchuk's a more complete player and has rounded out his game nicely. Ovechkin has the potential to be better/do the same, but until I see it I'd have Kovalchuk
Oh boy...here come the folks saying Kovy doesn't show up for the playoffs :x
I'll take Ilya.
Not a single person in this thread has said anything remotely close to "Kovy doesn't show up for the playoffs."
I said "Ovechkin is a playoff game changer" because he has proven to be an absolute beast in the playoffs.
This doesn't mean that Kovalchuk doesn't show up for the playoffs. In fact Kovalchuk could be a solid playoff performer and I would still say that Ovechkin is a playoff game changer, because he has been absolutely beastly in the playoffs throughout his career.
I am a big Kovalchuk and and it's great to see him putting up solid offensive numbers this season, and hopefully he continues that into the playoffs. But surely you cannot be upset just because I pointed out how great Ovechkin plays during the post season.

My post was not aimed at you. I made it simply because when someone brings up playoff performance, their first thought is that Kovalchuk didn't show up in either of the playoff series he played in.

I would say the opposite actually.
Ovechkin has more of a complete game, while Kovalchuk is more of a complete Sniper than Ovechkin.
This if talking about style of play of course....

How does Ovechkin have a more complete game? Ovechkin's idea of playing defence is hitting the puck carrier. Kovalchuk actually plays positional defence (albeit still below average) in NJ.
That said, one bad year for Ovechkin does not remove him from the top tier of NHL winger talents. My answer to the poll is still Ovechkin.

he means the defensive side of the game, playing on the PK and such
Ovechkin. If it was regular season only, I'd be on the fence. Kovalchuck has been heating up lately and Ovechkin has been meh for his standards, but it's really hard to ignore what he's done the past 7 seasons. The thing that tips it in AO's favour is the playoffs. Despite not having a cup yet, he always produces in the playoffs.
