Not much of a game in Freddy tonight...UNB scored early and often and by early in the 3rd were up 8-1...a couple late PP goals for moncton made the final 8-3.
Hopefully Moncton can find a little better effort for tomorrow night..pretty much outplayed in every respect tonight.
The 8-3 score was actually kind of Generous, if they didnt let off the gas the last half of the game and start playing the 3rd/4th lines mostly with the occasional shift to the Bailey and Culligan lines, and that onslaught of penalties later in the third, this seemed like it was on its way to being a 9-1, 11-1 game. UNB even had a short late power play where you could tell Wright and Desnoyier at the point were only worried about keeping the puck possesion and not shooting purposely.
As for the late penalty onslaught, yea some things got chippy , thats fine you expect it to between these teams, and even worse when the score gets out of hand, but than their became a point, where the ref was just calling everything in the dying last couple of minutes that got really ridiculus. The ref even got booed by the UNB Crowd for calling a Penalty on Moncton late (so no im not being biased for Moncton scoring on back to back 5 on 3's). And why was every UNB player sent to the dressing room regardless of their penalty, if they got 2 minutes and their was 3:37 on the clock they were sent off, they must have had 6 or 7 guys sent packing, moncton would have had 3 or so as well.
Josh Kidd's hit on Dean Ouelete was clean as can be, and he got checking to the Head? Lacroix from moncton seems like a bonehead, maybe not his typical style, but he was dirty and had his mouth running all night, trying to get a cheap shot whereever he could
Can someone Check on Hollywood, one of the most common faces to see in here the past few years, putting alot into his game previews and layouts, and the Hollywood top 34, and Manitoba loses out and boom....gone. We still need ur previews and if not a Hollywood top 34, at least a Hollywood University Cup Top 6, or something
Josh Kidd's hit on Dean Ouelete was clean as can be, and he got checking to the Head?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was a clean hit...looked like he hit him right in the arm/shoulder. The fact that Kidd is a big guy and sent the much smaller Ouellet flying probably made it look worse than it actually was.
lets get the fur flying here about formats! Specifically the OUA cake walk.
While i wait for the broadcast of the Jets from the left coast could someone please explain to me the various playoff formats in the CIS.
Two teams qualify from the AUS this year
and....
they play a best of 5 to determine the winner correct? Knowing both will participate, why not a best of three in the years they have 2 reps. save some energy especially if they have to travel( i realize this year they don't)
Three teams qualify from the OUA
the Urban Cowboys and the McGillite's( in holly's absence)
and they don't even have a final series ...they have a "friendly"#@$*
I don't know what else to call it? mostly arrogance i say!
And 3 and 4 play in a huge match to see who else goes? why one game? Win a game go to the final six....?make em earn it.
All there other series matches were best of three
Okay i get that somebody in the AUS must have thought if the semis were best of 5 then the finals had to be, more revenue etc. But if they really go at it game 4 and 5 could have some banged up bodies!! And not much recovery time! But that is what playoffs are about a little adversity...endurance character etc.
In the west best of 5 would take forever if only on weekends so it best of three works! But they are wars..
BUT for pity sake what is with the best of one?
I suggest the Men's curling page playoff at least?
Think about it first before you belittle me AUS fan, Shirley Seinfeld is over by now.
1 and 2 playoff, winner goes to the one game final. But force the loser to have to earn their way there. Loser (of 1/2 game)plays the winner of the 3 and 4 match to determine the 2nd and 3rd spots. Put some meaning into the final four. this is embarrassing really.
The schools from the Q are guaranteed a spot for religious reasons or something so they wont risk losing the 1 or 2 spot ?? I don't follow a thing here?
If they don't want to lose their spot at least have a series between 1 and 2. Call it the avoiding UNB series! That would be motivating? no?
I would love to hear the rationale regarding these little one game things!?
tick tock
Glad to see Quesnel ok after taking that spear...laid on the ice for awhile in pain but was right back out there for the start of the PP...didn't even miss a shift....
On another note...the reffing in this league/province continues to be brutal. This is the 3rd straight UNB home game that has been a gong show.
"Think about it first before you belittle me AUS fan..."
I don't think I've ever belittled you, Mikey. If you think so, please show me where.
I like that idea of a Page Playoff. Travel might be an issue for the 2-3 game and perhaps the final as well, but these things can be done.
Perhaps the rationale for one game is because there are no 1st round byes in the OUA they end up with as many games as AUS or CW. For example, UQTR and Windsor have played 8 and Western 7 games with one game remaing to play. Should UNB sweep, they will have only played 6. A CW team may only play 4 games with a bye and two sweeps.
The reffing in the OUA this year has been terrible too. The lakehead games were horrendous to watch at times with refs trying to be the attraction. To the point I was embarrassed for the teams that had to travel all the way up to thunder bay for bush league reffing. A good chunk of the games I watched online from southern ontario I watched were a joke too. Not sure whats going on but I personally would rather watch a game where the refs let both teams know how they will call it and be consistent. One way or the other.... let it all go.... call everything as long as it is known how it will be called.
games 1 and 2 were extremely physical, big time hits, tons of stick work, constant pushing and cheap shots after the whistle. Goaltenders were plowed into at both ends. This series could get extremely nasty in Moncton and players are going to be banged up. Nasty little war out there!
Personally I would like to see them scrap the whole 'treat the OUA as two separate conferences' thing...I don't have a problem with the OUA getting two spots every year but a Quebec-based team shouldn't be guaranteed a spot. I doubt this would ever fly though since those schools would no doubt make a big fuss over it, and rightfully so.
The page playoff idea is an interesting and different idea though....but probably too radical for the CIS. You could keep the separate east/west playoffs for travel purposes and then once you get to the final four re-seed them based on regular season record. So you would always have 2 east and 2 west teams in the final four but one team from each conference wouldn't necessarily make it.

Exactly. If they are going to call everything...fine. If they are going to let things go...fine. But be consistent and make sure the teams know early on how its going to be called. The problem is all of the best refs are being scooped up by the CHL or other leagues.

The things I was wondering is how are any suspensions accrued during conference play dealt with at Nationals? If UNB wraps it up on Sunday but someone gets a CFB penalty...will they be suspended for the first game of Nationals? I could see this maybe deterring some of the rough stuff abit...especially if the game isn't in doubt late.

Definitely, remember the Acadia/UPEI final in 1992?...sorry age is getting the better of me, never considered that a long time ago before, at any rate; both teams got into a scrum, actually it was worse than that, it was enough to dole out the misconducts etc. Acadia had bombed them in game 1 in Wolfville, but in those days, there were two divisions, the Kelly and the MacAdam, and for the AUAA final, home game rotated between the two divisions, regardless of how the finalists finished in regular season. So this was game 2 in PEI, where game 2 if necessary would be played as well. Acadia won it in OT I believe, they definitely won it in a close game with some bad blood. PEI had a terrible reputation in those days with the notorious clown John Nelson, a gifted player, but what a clown most of the time. Anyway there was some grease handed out, Acadia lost three guys to suspensions, went to the CIAU's in Toronto, when it was a 2 game sudden death affair, semi final, final that was it. They were out the three guys. Won the first game handily, lost to Alberta by 2 goals in the final, Alberta had Cory Cross and Ian Herbers on def... I don't think there is anything to worry about this year though, both teams are going.

That was one of the worst officiated games that I have seen in many many years, and that officiating crew is very fortunate that the score was close, if the score had of gotten out of hand like the night before, it would have been a gong show. (even more so than it was)
The taller of the two referees was just terrible, he was not very professional out there. He was yelling at players and letting his emotions get the best of him.
The "spearing" penalty was marginal at best, the check from behind that was called a boarding, they have been calling that type of hit checking from behind all year, and the Moncton penalty late in the third, think it was a holding, but after it was initially called, the player punched the UNB player a couple of times to the head after the whistle.
Starting to sound like a homer, but that was bad last night. The night before was questionable, and agree about the big hit, looked like a good body check. As for sending the players off, they were all getting 10 min misconducts, so with less than 10 mins left in the third, they were sent to the dressing room.
There was also a brutal head shot on Stamler in the UNB end, during the third period, it was missed by both refs. The cheap shots were coming from both teams.
Acadia had a really good team back then full of WHL recruits making "good" money coaching hockey school in Wolfvillle...lol.
The Axeman did lose their entire 2nd line for the Nationals after an incident in the old AUAA play-offs.
Alberta crushed UQTR 9-1 in the semi-finals that year with former Ottawa Senators Head Coach Corey Clouston scoring his only career hat-trick.
This was redemption for the Bears who outshot UQTR 41-19 the year before but lost 7-2 in the Championship Game.
The Bears advanced to the National Final in T.O. and beat Acadia 5-2 with Todd Goodwin getting a hat-trick.
Bears Coach Bill Moores had one of the best "D's" in CIS History that year.
Cross (6'5, 215 pounds) and Herbers (6'4", 220) would go on to have NHL careers. Garth Premak (6'3", 210) was the CIS Tournament MVP and would later play for the National Team. Serge Lajoie (6'2", 205) was the Sullivan Tropy Winner the next season.
The Bears played Acadia the next year in Toronto in the Semi-Final. Tom Coolen didn't get Alberta any "game-tape" until the day before the game, after Alberta shipped theirs off after winning Canada West...lol.
Bears jumped out early, but Acadia smoked them 9-4 and crushed Toronto's "Not-so-Magnficient Seven" fifth-years 12-1...
And I have always maintained Acadia's real feat that championship year, in 1993, was not the 12-1 shellacking they handed to a bunch of schoolboys, ( I am not trying to be derisive or arrogant, their level of entry recruit next to Acadia's was like beyond comparison) but the 9-4 spanking of UA. It was, as one coaching friend put it, the real scary thing about Acadia that year.
The year before, in that UPEI altercation, Mark McFarlane, Scott Farrell, and I want to say Colin Gregor ( from West) were the unfortunates. But Gregor scored the winning goal, he may have been the recipient of the 3rd misconduct or the season rule, they all might have been for that matter. Coolen, always trying something, we at Saint Mary's had no sympathy for them, they knew the rules and they pushed it, aside from them regularly handing us our arses on a platter.
In 1993 our Steve Kluczkowski was the finalist for the player of the year with Lajoie. I can still see them standing together waiting for the announcement.
There was also a brutal head shot on Stamler in the UNB end, during the third period, it was missed by both refs. The cheap shots were coming from both teams.
Nope, none of them would ever be accused of being Saints that is for sure. Still curious what got Hardy the 10 min misconduct.
