Yakupov and Grigorenko are locks to play for their NHL club next year, IMO. And I'm sure there will be 2-3 guys who impress their clubs and stay up for the whole season.
Yep, that's what I was saying. I expect Yakupov and Grigorenko to play next year and maybe a couple of more. I expect Carolina to be picking in the 5-7 range so it's unlikely (but not impossible) that anyone picked there will make an impact next year. Skinner did so never say never, but looking at this list of prospects, I don't expect it.
Not to say JR won't try to have them on the team next year.
I don't think anyone needs to worry about JR being interested in Trouba.
Trouba is committed to the university of Michigan and is said to sometimes have questionable hockey sense. I don't see JR taking another defenseman that is committed to Michigan.
I agree, but realistically, that's the only way JR will take a defenseman. If he feels he's head and shoulders above the guy that fills a need. He's kind of shown that in the last 2 drafts.
I think we're pretty much in agreement. All I'm basically saying is that if there's a player on your board who you have listed as the BPA over the other by a longshot, then absolutely you take the BPA. But with the Dumba/Faksa example I used above, I wouldn't be upset at taking the 2nd BPA as long as he fits a need and isn't that much worse than the guy in front of him.
I could be wrong on this, but BPA isn't always *that* clear-cut. If there's a handful of guys in the same range, I'm sure we'll take a forward (even more specifically, a center). But if an elite defenseman drops into our spot, I'm sure they're prepared to take him. From what I can tell right now, BPA is not going to be an easy thing to define after No. 1 this year. There seem to be question marks with everyone.
I wouldn't be surprised if Edmonton and the Islanders have the d-men rated higher simply because they know they need d-men and they may be looking at it with a slight bias. I'm sure we're also missing how good some of these d-men are, because we're really concentrating on the elite forwards.
It's looking awfully No. 4 overall to me. I'd like to think Montreal will pass us, but they just really suck. The Islanders are playing well enough to stay ahead of us. I'm worried about the Wild, though. They're awful.

Canes could free fall tho here real soon... not that I believe in tanking but the road trip ahead is insane with teams that are either hot or need the game to help their playoff chances. Next win for the canes could be the game against the Wild in a few weeks.
Should we worry that if we pick high and get one of the NHL ready forwards that JR will just consider that Staal winger hole filled and sit on his hands in FA, other than getting Muller his proper 4th line heavy forecheckers.

The FA class is weak to begin with this year, it would probably only effect going after someone like Parise who we aren't likely to get anyway.
im not convinced grigorenko is gonna be in the nhl next year. he seems so spindly/lanky on his skates. the guys that make it at 18 are usually high end skaters who can get them selves out of trouble that way. you dont often see guys that look like this kid walk right in. he has none of malkins explosiveness.
To be fair, they've been wrecked by injuries. They've lost their top 2 centers (leaving Matt Cullen/Kyle Brodizak as their 1/2 punch...ugh), they've lost 3 goaltenders (Backstrom, Harding, and their AHL goalie Kuemper), lost their sparkplug in Clutterbuck...
And that's not even touching on their defensemen, which even completely healthy is below average at best. And then injuries tore into it and now...
I think the Canes have 2 second round picks (one from San Jose) and 3 fourth round picks (1 from Boston for Corvo and 1 from NJ for Poni). Is this correct?
Button (on his TSN ranking) has Lukas Sutter rising and at #45.
Don't know much about him, but given how JR likes to collect Sutters, do you think he'll take him with one of his 2nd round picks (or 3rd rounder if he's still there)?

It's tough not to. Brandon's a stud, Brett seems to have a future as an NHL player, and even Brody is putting together a fantastic year for Lethbridge. Put that together with Lukas rising (when two players are ranked close to each other, it always seems to be the risers that end up being fantastic players vs. the fallers from a higher position) and JR's tendency to collect families, and yeah, I think there's a pretty good chance we draft him.
Lukas is probably the most physical of the four, and probably not that far behind Brandon in terms of overall talent. If he was there at #45 I'd be pretty miffed if we passed on him unless there's some absolute unreal talent still on the board that we take instead (Hertl, Aberg, Teravainen).
Someone on the prospects board compared him to Steve Ott, probably not too far off of a comparison.

I honestly just wish we could find a really good defensive center so we could get Sutter off the fourth line. He has shown great offensive ability when he gets the chance. But that doesn't happen too much sine he is stuck on the third line.
interesting to see Faksa jumping up so much from the initial rankings, especially coming off a WJC where he was either injured or sick. But hmmm, another Kitchener player right in our draft wheelhouse ranking wise? Don't mind if we do.
Dave you obviously seem to know a lot about the upcoming prospects so who do you think we should draft if today's standings were how we finished? Also, should it be a center or a winger? I wonder because with Rask in the system now, it seems like we may have a lot of centers. Personally I like Galchenyuk but I haven't seen a ton of stuff about this year's prospects.

if we finish where we are now:
#6 - Forsberg or Galchenyuk (depending on who's on the board)
#36 - Martin Frk (highly doubtful he's still there)/Tom Wilson/Tomas Hertl/Pontus Aberg/Teuvo Teravainen
#45 - Lukas Sutter
#66 - Matia Marcantuoni
#96 - Brian Hart
after them:
Thomas Spelling, Mikko Lehtonen, Max Iafrate, Quentin Shore
those are at least the guys I like. This year is wide open after the top 6 or 7 prospects though.
