Previous King Clancy Memorial Trophy winner Shane Doan has been traded along with several other pieces to San Jose. Rumor had it that discussions involving Doan had begun a couple weeks ago.
Colorado also gave up the services of Steve Bernier a first round pick (16th overall) in 2003. He never really panned out with any team, but the Sharks feel he is still young enough to be groomed into the 2nd 3rd line power forward he once was made out to be.
Along with Bernier went a conditional 2nd round pick in 2013 in the event that Doan would not re-sign in San Jose.
This transaction did not come cheap for San Jose, as they had to give up their top defensive prospect Simon Despres. He was really the piece that made this trade even possible. And the Sharks will be sad to see such a young talented prospect go, but the price had to be payed to make a long playoff push.
David Jones who has recently been performing above par was also traded in the deal. Signed for 3 more years at 1.9250M this piece of the puzzle secured the deal for Doan as he is a goal scoring threat when healthy.
Bottom line, the Sharks are here to make some noise in the Playoffs and would like to make the jump from 12th to top 10.

Conditional 2nd, 2013 (Doan not re-signing)
Wasn't planning on moving Doan unless it was a deal we really liked. With this move, we feel we get a much cheaper replacement, and possibly a good young defenseman with top 4 potential.
With Travis Zajac almost missing the entire year, we were still able to compete. We feel his return by playoff time will neutralize the loss of Doan.

Just so you guys know, March 6th is the last day of the season. March 7th - April 7th is the playoff season.
The playoffs will be the same format as we did in the second season of the league, which is weekly matchups.
Quarter Finals: WED March 7th - WED March 14th
Semi Finals: THU March 15th - THU March 22nd
Conference Finals: FRI March 23rd - FRI March 30th
Stanely Cup Finals: SAT March 31st - SAT April 7th
If the playoffs were to start today we'd have the matchups as:
NJD vs. OTT
WSH vs. BUF
BOS vs. MTL
PHI vs. TOR
DET vs. STL
COL vs. CHI
SJS vs. MIN
EDM vs. CBJ
Late in the season teams become more spread out so unless some players have big weeks for their teams this is likely to stay put until Tuesday.

To Brandon Dubinsky, Ian White, Sean Bergenheim, 2012 2nd
To Mike Richards, Erik Christensen
Detroit is very happy to make this move to bring in some extra scoring depth on offense and defense. White instantly becomes one of if not our best defender alongside Ehrhoff and Girardi. Dubinsky figures to slot in behind our elite core of Kessel, Vanek, Kesler and Weiss. Getting back a draft pick was important for us to help improve our crop of prospects. We have another possible deal in the works, and are constantly looking to improve.
With this move we dress White and scratch Polak
Gobo to confirm
Detroit is looking to move Paul Martin, Brooks Orpik, Roman Polak, Lee Stempniak, Dan Paille and Craig Anderson. PM me if interested in any of these players.
There will need to be a compensation on this trade because the 2012 2nd is Montreal's property.
