I've seen more difficult goals be called softies on Luongo. The Wheeler goal definitely should have been stopped. Edler looked pathetic on that play, and Schneider wasn't good either.
Are you nuts? Edler blew a tire and Wheeler was able to walk straight in on Schneider. You can't fault any goalie on a 2 on 1 where the shooter is allowed to walk right in on the goalie. Blaming Schneider on that one is ridiculous.
He made some pretty good saves and was solid enough for the win. Wellwood too was left alone in front. Granted, Luongo does get critisized on similar situations. But trying to deflect some critisism to Schneider is all that you seem to be trying to do here. But it ain't working. The kid was solid as usual.

I'm sure Schneider himself would admit that he made a mistake on that goal. That's not to say it wasn't a tough situation but you know he would like a do-over.
If people are going to hold Luongo to impossible standards, I think it's fine if others point out that Schneider isn't perfect either.
Always enjoy reading your post-game assessments orcatown - possibly because I never seem to disagree. Hell, I've learned to just wait for yours. Saves me writing it all out myself.
agreed, nice summary
for me this game was had lots of positives, even though we're clearly working out of a slump and nowhere near peak performance.
the shot total was great, and everyone seemed to be skating vs a hungry and decent team (agreed that Kassian looked behind a step, and i think was benched after the Welly goal.)
Even though the Sedins are still struggling, good to see the rest of the team step up and get the greasy win.
Especially good to see the GWG was Pahlsson's first -- that should go a long way to solidifying his place in the room.
Thought like most others that the 3rd D pairing was good, although Tanev got roughed up at times and I'm still not sure about Gragnani -- his eval period continues.
Against the nastier teams (St Loo, Nash, etc), you will certainly see more Rome & Alberts ...it's somewhat unavoidable.
Sedins are working, and will get there ...but this is officially their worst slump in years. Good to have it now, with time to get it together and get cranking for the playoffs.
Schneider was fine -- good enough for the win, but not his best performance. Still, he continues to bring exactly what you need from your backup. I doubt there's another team in the league that has the comfort level with their #2 goalie (maybe Boston, pre-Rask injury ...also, maybe St Loo.)
Just shocking it took them that long to put the Am/Ex line back together; those guys were the best second line we had all year prior to Booth and Higgins getting injured.
The third unit is fine. Let Kassian work it out on the fourth...he plays well with Lapierre.

I felt it was a good effort and a return to form for the Canucks (hence my including Thin Lizzy in the OP).
Kesler's post-game comments were refreshing too.
"Want to get back to playing the way we know we can and not limp into the playoffs."
I think they've all been just thinking "Can we start the playoffs please" the last while but then realized they better get in playoff form now because they're just around the corner. The effort just hasn't been there the last while. In my opinion they've clearly been coasting in 3rd gear. Now they're in 4th and revving up to hit overdrive.

I agree on the Am/Ex line. I was waiting for that to happen as Raymond just wasn't working. I can only assume that the coaches were waiting until they were sure that Higgins was back to good health. He just brings so much to that line.
I'm sure Schneider himself would admit that he made a mistake on that goal. That's not to say it wasn't a tough situation but you know he would like a do-over.

Don't want to get too far into the Luongo thing, he definitely gets critisized unnessicarily, but he's also earned it with past performaces and his fat contract. I personally wouldn't fault any goalie on that play. He could have stopped it, but shouldn't be expected to in my opinion. People definitely hold goalies to impossible standards in Canuck-land.

I never said Schneider played poorly. I'm judging him by the same standards that people judge Luongo by, and that was a weak goal. Perhaps Schneider is mentally weak because that was a critical point in the game?
I do like Schneider, but it's sad that Luongo is held to ridiculously high standards that people don't hold Schneider to.

AV is a stubborn idiot sometimes. Even in an interview before this game, he had talked about how he wanted to get Raymond back to that 25 goal scoring form. There was clearly no chemistry with raymond on the 2nd line, but AV kept forcing it. About freaking time that he let the players that actually have chemistry together play together. There was no point in forcing Raymond to be something he is not and ruining the confidence of kes/booth at the same time. Let these guys enjoy playing hockey with Higgins because they showed that they played amazingly well together.

If that'd be seen as a weak goal for Luongo, and we are considering replacing Luongo with Schneider, why can't we hold them to the same standard?
Schneider cheated on that play anticipating the pass. If he doesn't cheat he makes an easy save.

Speaking from a personal standpoint, it's the 40 foot wristers beating him clean, belly flopping and tendancy to let in goals in bunches that has me uneasy about Luongo. Goals like that I personally wouldn't blame any goalie on.
As I said, people hold Luongo to these standards because he's on a great team in a Canadian market, has a great contract and has been given everything by this organization and fans. He's expected to be great. At all times. Too much to expect? Maybe, but without that standard of goaltending we'll be cupless for the forseeable future.
I appreciate your view on Luongo, you're right, he is held to a higher standard than probably any goalie outside of Montreal. But there are reasons behind it...
I'm sure Schneider himself would admit that he made a mistake on that goal. That's not to say it wasn't a tough situation but you know he would like a do-over.
He did after the game. He said he cheated and got caught.
Kassian - looks out of shape. Labouring on most of shifts and getting caught standing still. Not in the flow of the game. You wonder if you haven't got another Booth situation. When Booth got here he laboured as well and seems to wear out fast on his shifts. Booth's tempo has improved and you hope the Canucks can take Kassian to another level of fitness. Kassian might have played the first couple of games on adrenalin but really is not in the type of shape to sustain that level of play. Looking at a young player that needs development. Appears the Canucks have project here and Kassian is a long ways from being a finished product. To be expected.
More than lack of conditioning, IMHO it is more about being a first year pro and playing in the NHL. So much of the game is mental and it is all about focus - it is a tough grind to maintain consistency and up your complete level as the season goes on. Young players have to learn how to be able to bring a high level of play on a consistent basis. Fortunately Kassian has a number of top role models on the Canucks who can show him how to be a pro.

Mentally weak for surrendering 1 iffy goal in a nothing game?
Luongo gets criticized for letting bad goals get to him wich leads to goals in bunches. Did you see Schneider's game fall apart after that goal?
Cory Schneider doesn't get rattled like Luongo does. This should be obvious by now...

Chicago, Nashville and Carolina come to mind as three examples of Schneider getting rattled and dismantled this year in his limited appearances. It's happened to him pre-NHL too.

Did he give up goals in bunches in those 3 games? With a lot of them being poor goals?
Not sure why one bad goal is being flogged to death. It was a blown play by Edler and Schneider made a poor read as the last line of defense. Both Schneider AND Luongo have been stellar for this team and they will make mistakes on occasion...just like everyone else on the team has, just like the coaching staff has, and just like Gillis has. There is no sense in trashing either goalie...point out mistakes, have a favorite, but at least try and be objective. If every single bad goal turns into a referendum on our goaltending it doesn't say much for our fanbase.
If that'd be seen as a weak goal for Luongo, and we are considering replacing Luongo with Schneider, why can't we hold them to the same standard?
Do you really not know the answer to this question?

If he doesn't cheat, Wheeler goes the other way and still has a glorious chance. You do realize that he wouldn't have just shot the puck at him, right?
