What I am going to look at is in rebuilds, overall how does consecutive top-5 picks (just to broaden the sample size) actually work out:

Penguins:

2002: Whitney (5th overall)
2003: MAF (1st overall)
2004: Malkin (2nd overall)
2005: Crosby (1st overall)
2006: Staal (2nd overall)

Chicago:

2004: Barker (3rd overall)
2006: Toews (3rd overall)
2007: Kane (1st overall)

Washington:

2004: Ovechkin (1st overall)
2006: Backstrom (4th overall)
2007: Alzner (5th overall)

LA Kings:

2007: Hickey (4th overall)
2008: Doughty (2nd overall)
2009: Schenn (5th overall)

St. Louis(this one is a smaller sample size):

2006: EJ (1st overall)
2008: Pietreangelo (4th overall)

Carolina:

2003: E. Staal (2nd overall)
2004: Ladd (4th overall)
2005: JMFJ (3rd overall)

And going wayyy back:

Atlanta thrashers:

1999: Stefan (1st overall)
2000: Heatley (2nd overall)
2001: Kovy (1st overall)
2002: Lehtonen (2nd overall)

I guess the point I'm making is this. The obvious trend I see is apart from Washington, teams with top-5 consistently, one top-5 pick always doesn't live up it's draft position. I should add, I could've used the Jets with Kane and Bogo, but I thought it was far too early to make a call on either.

Of course this doesn't mean that the pick we make will not be as good as his draft position, not at all because there are so many other variables in the draft that a scratch analysis like this won't do enough to prove either way, but it's just something to interesting to see.
Looks like the teams that drafted the centers won the cups. Go figger.

The team that drafted 3 centers won one cup (Pittsburgh).
Two teams that each drafted one center each won one cup (Carolina, Chicago).
Two teams that each drafted one center each has not yet won a cup (Los Angeles, Washington).

Not sure what you can derive from that list.

Forget Dumba; it's time to start talking about Yakupov again.

Ahh still no way we drop 7 points, but never bet against the oilers sucking.

Ill be there.

Meaningless game, but it will still be five times more exciting than the Oiler game.

Are you going to the playoff games?

Yeah. I love watching the Oil Kings this year. It's nice to get away from the Oilers for a bit. lol. It's nice to watch a competent defensive squad for once.

Yeah I got that 99 dollar pack thing. Hopefully they go far. lol.

Hey there's always the lottery. (No way I can see us improving enough to get out of that)

well, yakupov is certainly not out of the question ... we DO have a 18.8% chance of winning the lottery as of right now, that's a decent chance (roughly 1 in 5)

I'm looking forward to Galchenyuk's return. He is rumoured to be playing at London on the 16th. I think he is the best center in the draft.

7 point difference between CBJ and the Oilers, with 30 possible points remaining.

God we may be in the running for Yakupov and a 3rd consecutive 1st overall pick. That's freaking depressing.

Around Christmas I was thinking, "hey I hope we can snag Dumba at 5th overall this year!"

Yeah..

I love everyone who's so high on Galchenyuk.

I'm not saying you will but I have a feeling that the people who are big time boosters for this kid will say I told you so if he comes back and lights it up.

Or else they will use the injury as an excuse if he busts. Seems like a safe bet dark horse to me.

As long as we are in the lottery we are definitely in the running.

For all the guys that want to pick a forward (specifically a center) would you trade the pick for Couturier?

IMO hes better than any center in the draft. PHI may want a blue chip Dman.

I'd consider it.

no.2 + Theo Peckham for Couturier + PHI 1st

Gagner + Dubnyk for Ryan Ellis + Lindback (Nashville)

Sign UFA Bryan Allen (D)

Hall RNH Eberle
MPS Couturier Hemsky
Smyth Horcoff Jones
Eager Belanger Hartikanen

Smid Allen
Whitney Petry
Schultz Ellis
Sutton

Khabby
Lindback

Hmm very good idea. I wonder if Philly would consider it???

He'd be a perfect 2nd line centre for us and would give us what we need (a big centre whose great defensively and will be very good in the dot in time as well).

How about instead of Ellis, we send Gagner and MPS to MTL for Subban +?

Montreal wouldn't do that. If they were smart.

That's a considerable difference from what i suggested, i dont think they need to add, and i think they would be hesitant as it is.

Philly has Schenn and Couturier so it may be possible. Depends on Briere a bit I think

I think that Grigorenko and Galchenyuk definitely have a good deal more upside than Couturier but i actually think that Couturier is the best fit for our team and is well further ahead in his development than the other two so i would seriously consider that deal.
