NHL 08 was the biggest break through this generation, especially online play. Allowed you to have multiple people on a team, huge step forward IMO.

It absolutely kills me that I can't run that game under windows 7 (problems with main menu - buttons dont react)...
NHL 04 definetely works on Windows 7...go on the problems section of the rebuilt forum and describe the issue, they should be able to get it going.

Btw, NHL 08 wasn't the first game where you could have more than 2 people play online, you can play anywhere between 2 v 1 or 2v2 and 5 v 5 on NHL 2004 online....I've done it myself but I prefer to play 1 v 1 online.

I actually don't enjoy the newer NHL games and most new games for that matter because the experience is not the same as playing old school video games with a next to none learning curve.
I like all the crazy **** you could do in the older NHL games, if I want the real thing I will just, you know, actually go play it.
Preference it is, then. I just remember on all the old games I used to play the #1 thing that would bug me about them would be the gameplay vs. what I watched in real life. Often found myself griping "that wouldn't happen in real life!" or "why the **** is that player going way over there?!" Just made them feel less like the real thing and thus less like hockey.

Loved Blades of steel when playing with friends but Ice Hockey was the one I played the most. I always had skinny guy (Gretzky), medium guy (Lemieux), Fat Guy (Lindros), and another skinny guy (MacInnis).

NHL 2004 was one I spent the most time playing and found the most enjoyable.

I used to play Mario Lemieux Hockey ALL THE time when I was a kid. Oh man, forgot about that. If you set the settings just right, in the middle of the game the word BRAWL would flash on the screen and everyone on the ice would start fighting.

That game was awesome, and the reason I was first a Mario and Penguins fan before I learned that the Bruins were better.

NHL Breakaway on the N64 was a pretty fun game, as was NHL Hitz on the GameCube.

I actually drove to my parents' house to play Ice Hockey on my old Nintendo. It's so old though it keeps crashing and I can't get past the 1st period.

I see Alpine Studios apparently stole a bunch of Mario's gameplay!

Saturn had a ton of great games, but most of them didn't release outside of Japan Land.

Ill throw in my pick for NHL 99 on the Nintendo 64, mainly because I was in High School when it came out and have great memories hanging out after school with friends playing it for hours, along with the Wrestling games and Mario titles.

Ahhh those were the days..

If you are a fan of Franchise mode Then NHL 2K8 is miles ahead of any hockey game past or present.
I still play it till this day.
