That was 2nd rounder acquired when Leafs wanted there 2010 2nd rounder back to send to Boston in Kessel deal
Hawks got Flames 2nd in 2011 (Prev acq by Tor) + Leafs 3rd in 2011 back in summer of 2009
Its clear by asking for Saad that Stars had no interest in trading with Blackhawks ,, Which sucks cause Grossman could have been helpful as #4/5 dman
Understand why Stars woudln't trade with team they are trying to catch though
We had interest, or we wouldn't have spoken with you guys at all.
Joe was smart though, and was either aware that overpayment would be required, or that was what it would take for him to move Grossman to a competitor over Philly.
And Joe obviously wanted him in the 2nd round at the draft. He's a significant upgrade over Ritchie.

At end of day a UFA bottom pairing dman is being traded
When the GM of team making trades asks for the best prospect of team he is talking too it shows he had no interest in actually making a deal
Saad is as close to untouchable as a prospect can get for Hawks. He is regarded by Hawks front office as blue chip (Remember this guy before his injuries was a top 10 pick to most scouts)

For all we know Chicago could have offered a similar yet not quite as good package and GMJN told them he was going to take the Philly offer unless they were willing to part with Saad.

Do remember we're competing with you for a playoff spot. It'd take more from you guys than from Philly to get Grossman, and that's what it would've taken, obviously.
I know he was injured and fell, but he was still a 2nd rounder. There was obviously something the scouts saw (or didn't see).
And wasn't Nieuwy going to pick him up over Ritchie?
No loss in asking is all I have to say. If they're offended by it, who cares?
I think the fact that Saad was taken right before Ritchie is just a nice little tidbit. We have absolutely zero idea who Dallas would have taken if both were on the board.
the Hawks weren't offended. Hawks fans and his mom might have been, but who cares about them.
I haven't read all this before, but you nailed it. He was trying to make noise about this in the Trade forum earlier.
GMJN should expect more from a conference rival they are fighting to get into the playoffs. It's not an insult, and GMJN did the right thing to acquire assets and not help a team that could ultimately keep them from the playoffs (like Chicago did last year).
