Yeah, no kidding! I expect the Habs will do that after next season when he is an RFA and can be taken to arbitration (meaning no offer sheets).
No need to do it now.

After July 1st, I don't see why not but hoping a new GM is in place and I'm sure he will want to wait and see Patches play which is normal. I expect an extension more next year in January just like Gorges

A player taken to arbitration is protected from offer sheets but comes with the risk of actually going to arbitration (and either losing the player to UFA immediately or signing him for only one year)

That's quite a strong and controversial opinion.

Too early to sign him to a long term deal.
But then again, Marinaro is a complete idiot, so who gives a **** what he says.

He doesn't want to speculate but for the sake of speculating he believes the Habs should sign Max long term. He will then proceed to toot his own horn when it does happen despite the fact he doesn't want to toot his own horn.

I can see the events unfold:
- Signed for 4 years
- Year 1, 20 goals
- Fans: TRADE HIM!!!
- Mid Year 2, 10 goals
- Fans: TRADE HIM, GIVE HIM AWAY, FIRE PG!!!
- Pre-Year 3, finally TRADED
- Year 3, 35 goals
- Year 4, 39 goals.
LOL
