Value of: Dion Phaneuf

I recall a few years ago when Phanuef was on Calgary's roster that it would take overpayment for the Flames to trade him away to another team. Now that he is on the Leafs, it seems that his stock has fallen considerably and no team would pay him $6.5 million to be on their roster.

The fact is, Phanuef is a stud defenseman in this league. He may not be that special franchise defenseman, but he is an all-star defenseman on two teams thus far in his career. If Phanuef was to become a free agent a General Manager would most likely pay him more than $6.5 million per year, or a long-term cap friendly front-loaded contract.

Make no mistake; Phanuef is still an impact defender. Even though this is coming from a Leafs fan, the truth is not over hyping Phanuef, he is a player most NHL teams would want on their roster.

That was in the early years in Calgary. He got worse and worse as time went on, when defencemen are suppossed to get better. He had the potential to be the best defenceman of his generation but never fulfilled that. He was quickly passed by many of his peers: Suter, Edler, Weber, Keith, Doughty, etc etc.... Phaneuf was projected to be potentially the best of the bunch, but instead has ended up on the fringes.

You seem to be under the impression that Mike Milbury still has a GM job in this league.
