Better hitter: Matt Martin vs. Alexei Emelin

Martin hits more than Emelin, yet Emelin is one of the D-men hit leaders. Both players can do bone-crushing hits. Who is the better hitter?

Remember: more hits =/= better hitter.

Martin hits more, Emelin hits better... If that makes sense.

Or Versteeg!

I was making light of the accident hit though, but I'm sure you picked up on that and got all serious on me. Shame on you!

Can't speak for Martin (from what I've seen on YT, though, I'm not too impressed), but Emelin is just a beast. This guy is as good at hitting in open ice as he is in delivering a bone-crushing hipcheck. Also has one of the best balances in the league. He just injured Tim Jackman with a clean check last game, by the way:

How do Emelin compare to Kronwall, Clutterbuck and the like?

The way I view them is Martin is like clutterbuck, hits hard and often. emelin is like kronwall where his hits are top10 worthy. emelin is gonna get caught out of position or hurt himself a bunch trying to destroy everyone.

In terms of actual hitting ability I would put them in this order: Kronwall, Emelin, Clutterbuck..... Kronwall picks and chooses his moments, the other two hit more often. But personal feelings aside on Kronwall, you will have a hard time finding anyone in the league that can "light up" a player better than he can.

Both players are fun to watch. Emelin, who I see more of as a Montreal fan gives me that "I wonder what he is going to do" feeling. Watching him hit, I am always waiting in case he obliterates the other player. Can we get a youtube of both players going for fun

Barry Smith (Red Wings assistant coach in late 90s, early 2000s) coached at a clinic I was at. Somebody asked him who the best hitter on the Red Wings was. He instantly responded with Kirk Maltby. He said other players hit harder, some hit more often, but Kirk Maltby was the only player on the Red Wings that could make five hits in one shift and stay standing the entire time.

Based on that, I would say Martin is the BETTER hitter, because he hits hard, often and from games I have seen can throw a hit(s) and get right back in the play. Emelin on the other hand seems to go for big hits that can take him out of position, and sometimes leave him getting up off the ice. (Not always of course)

Are you sure he wasn't talking about his balance? In which case the better player would be the one with the best balance.

Wouldn't throwing 5 hits and remaining on your feet the whole time imply he has great balance? Comparing a defenseman n regards to hitting is kind of whacky anyways. Different hits in different areas of the ice.

That is what I was saying, it means he has great balance. However it didn't fit with your reason for him being better. Emelin has exceptional balance as well so in this case it does not prove anything since both players most likely have exceptional balance. Then you were correct we are left comparing a D-man with exceptional balance to a forward with exceptional balance and you are right it is way to different to compare past that. That is why I suggested everyone just starts posting youtube's of both players hitting so we all can enjoy them both

Well I don't think I described it well enough. What my reasoning was for him being better is that he can throw more hits while maintaining his balance. Both great at their jobs.
