I honestly hope we end up picking third. Our defense needs a strong young presence. We've got enough forwards right now. I'd also like to move our 2nd round pick + to get a later first round pick to go after Malcom Subban. I've watched a few of his games, and he seems to have a lot of talent, and is quite athletic. I think he projects as more of a #1 than either of our goalie prospects (Bunz and Oliver Roy)
Maybe trade down your first and add your second for a slightly later first and another first?

Why wouldn't the Oil just keep their 1st and bury Horcoff if he and his contract are that bad?

I don't think that some folks realize how valuable a top 2 pick is, just look at the top 2 picks in most of the recent drafts for reference.
Nothing against MDZ, McDonaugh or Girardi but it will take more than 1 of them if the Oilers are to part with that pick. Staal would be interesting but the concussion is worrisome.
They would probably look to package that pick for a signed Weber or Suter or maybe a young Dman with enormous upside like OEL otherwise the Oilers will just draft their potential franchise player.

In any event, the only way i see that pick realistically being moved is to trade down a couple of spots to a team like Montreal or Toronto that is desperately looking for a top center. I think that the Oilers could get quite the deal for that pick if those GMs think highly enough of Grigorenko plus the Oilers could still get a top flite Dman with Murray, Dumba or Trouba.

Remember with these proposals that the Oilers hold the main card, teams will be coming to the Oilers with their interest not vice versa so unless it's a big overpay, it just won't happen.

Because that wouldn't help the Maple Leafs out.

For some reason this draft just doesn't seem to be gifted in many ways looking at the prospects. I understand there are a lot of nice prospects to be had, but my gut feeling is there are no real franchise players to be had in this draft. I can see an all-star player here and there, but nothing that screams a player will take a team to the promise land.

The Oilers will get a very good complimentary player in this draft for their current young guns. They should just keep the pick and draft the best player available.

Hopefully, they don't get screwed by the lottery, which is possible seeing Bettman may not want the Oilers to get another top pick.

Oh, I have pretty much convinced myself that Montreal is winning the lottery this year.

Smid and Girardi are not comparable. If the Norris wasn't so ridiculously biased towards D-men putting up points and was focused on D-men who actually play D, Girardi's name would be there for the last couple of years at least.

2007 - JVR
2006 - Staal
2005 - Ryan
2004 - Malkin

What would be the asking price for these players? Fairly high to very, very high for everyone except maybe JVR.

How many of these players would you be able to get for a Dan Girardi?

Even if the Oilers were to deal this player, I'd make the argument it would be much smarter to wait a year or two, the return back would likely be exponentially higher.
Pretty much my thoughts. Id take the chance on the player panning out like 2nd overall has for the last 10 years.

If it is my choice I go after the fwd. We have a lot of dmen prospects that are coming up. We need a legit number 2 centreman with size. Sorry Gagner I like you and all but we need some size in the top 6. We have Hemsky so our 2nd line needs to be bigger.

Draft Grigorenko and if Omark can prove for the rest of the season that he is a top 6 that would give us Gagner and Omark for trade chips. Even using PRV. We can always sign a 2nd line LW until prospects develop.
