If we're concerned about our minor slump, Boston has been a mediocre team since the ball dropped in Times Square. Seriously, I was impressed with them in one game and that was in St. Louis. I heard a stat that the last 12 times after they won a game they're an unbelievable 1-11. The fact that this team is still considered a contender is just a sign of how bad the east is. I know they won the cup last year, but this is a friggin 2.5 month long slump, time to call a spade a spade.
Edit: Maybe I'm exaggerating about being since New Years, they did manage their final true blowout of the season against Calgary in 2012. But do people remember when this team was actually feared?
This is why their problems are worse than ours. They went from absolutely dominating teams, to forgetting how to score.
Or how to keep the puck out of their net. Since their 9-0 blowout of the Flames, which started with their loss to the Canucks they are 14-13-2. Soon to be 14-14-2. Not only does this formerly intimidating team not scare anyone anymore, I'd welcome playing them now.
Pens lost games in the beginning of the season that they probably wouldn't have if not for injuries. They and Buffalo had the lion's share of them for a good portion there. Pens lost Malkin for awhile, Orpik missed some games, Staal for awhile, then Letang, and of course we all know about Crosby. Those are not just supporting players, those are their main guys. I honestly feel that had they been luckier with injuries they'd be leading the Atlantic and the East. I'm sure many will disagree with me, but whatever. IMO.
That said, Buffalo and Pittsburgh are getting guys back and are playing well right now. Funny what a healthy lineup can do.
Pens have had a nice run. But all good things come to an end. By the time they get to the Garden, the Rangers can have a 6-point lead and extend it to 8 with a win.
Pens have been at home and on a roll. After today, they will have almost 5 days off until they play the Rangers. Crosby or no Crosby, that'll slow them down.
Of course, I'm talking best case scenario. Worst case scenario (Rangers lose both Isles and Canes games in regulation), they still go into the Pens game with a 2-point lead and the tiebreaker.
Everybody obsessing over the Pens is feeding into Bettman's hype machine. I can easily see them get bounced in the 1st round. They are way too streaky. They have been all season.
Remember how the Rangers were supposed to be triple unstoppable once Staal returned? It doesnt always work out that way. Crosby coming back doesnt guarantee anything.
Pens fan here. What we've done lately has been more than just a streak imo. Ever since one of our writer's called the team out in the media and said the Pens were thinking about giving the "C" to someone else since Sid was out the Pens have been simply unbeatable. We're 20-4-1 since that article.
I still doubt we catch you guys though. We have to beat you in the two remaining matchups and imo it's likely you guys will take at least one of those games. Looking forward to Thursday though. The atmosphere in MSG if Sid comes back for that one is going to be intense. Nothing like playoff hockey before the playoffs even start, eh?
