its way too early in the season for this mock draft
where was nuge ranked this time last year? not #1, couturier was still #1.. also you have no proof the oilers will even finish in the bottom 5
When your team is out of the playoffs by christmas and getting bslapped most nights it's never too early to be thinking about the draft and trade deadline.

I'm using recent Oilers seasons in part for my hypothesis of them finishing in the lottery. RNH, Larsson, and Landeskog were cementing there spots this time last year as three of the top prospects with Hubredeau making his move in the playoffs/Mem cup. Couturier was falling.
I don't know the lower round prospects too well, so I'll do a handful of 1st/2nd rounds.
First pick(1 or 2 overall): Grigorenko C
Mid First (Acquired via trade): Koekkoek D
Second Round: Michael Matheson D
First pick (Grigorenko is off the board): Yakupov W
Mid First (Acquired via trade and trade up to 8-12 range): Cody Ceci D OR (if selecting in 14-18 range): Olli Maata
Second Round: Andreas Athanasiou C
First pick (Grigorenko/Yak are off the board): Dumba D
Mid First (Acquired via trade if in 14-18 range): Grigersons C OR (if in 8-12 range) Gaunce C
Second Round: Michael Matheson
In all three scenarios I looked at who would be probably available and tried to pick for positions of need, a 2C and a big D man.
2008 was considered a deep draft as well but the teams that traded up to grab their guy are sure looking smart.
The senators moved up to grab Karlsson, Buffalo moved up to grab Myers and Toronto moved up to grab Schenn. They did this even though all 3 of them were "risks" or considered "love/hate" players.
That sure beats Josh Bailey, Chet Pickard and Colten Teubet.

No way I move down.
I agree moving up from a mid range position could grab us a guy like Gaunce or Reinhart which would be great.
I predict the oilers will end up with 3 first rounders this next draft. Oilers trade smyth. Only to get him back july 1st
More likely the Oilers have just the one 1st rounder, I don't see any tem giving th Oilers a mid 1st rounder as other than the big 3 young guns, there is nothing worthwhile trading for.
My go at this (could change a lot before the draft):
1 (2) Mikail Grigorenko - C An easy choice if Yakupov is gone. Gives the Oilers great strength up the middle for years to come.
2 (32) Dalton Thrower - D - worth taking a shot at. This spot is really for any decent dman that falls from the 1st round. I think there will likely be one or two simply because there are so many highly rated dmen this year... someone is likely to fall and the Oil may catch a good one here. I like the strategy of picking a forward with the 1st rounder and a dman with the 2d rounder. Wildcard... if for some reason Vasilevski is still on the board at #32 then he's my instant choice.. I'm just thinking he goes ~15th-20th in the 1st so I don't see him available in the 2nd but if he is... instant BPA by far.
3 (62) Nikita Gusev -F - A small, very talented Russian to go with the big, very talented Russian chosen above. Instant 2nd line chemistry... huzzah.
3 (74 from LA... ya they missed the playoffs ) Tomas Hyka -RW - Another talented smallish player. Too small? Nah. Just needs to fill out a little and then bring that skill to the Oilers lineup. Has the talent to help out the top 9.
4 (92) Lukas Sutter -C I don't think he stays around until the 5th round so I'd take him here. You know you are getting a decent player with a Sutter... worth a shot with a 4th round pick.
I'll skip the 5th and 6th round picks as I'm not as "in the know" about the deeper picks. Whatever big Slovak dman Stu decides to choose there is good with me.
