Protec Ponds in somerset (Worlds Fair Drive off of Easton Ave, right off 287) ran a decent Adult 101 and 102 clinic on Sat AMs. Really basic, beginner level stuff if that's what you've looking for.
i went to a clinic the other day on staten island. it was awesome. i had such a great time that i'm considering skipping the devil-ranger game on tuesday so i can play hockey.

Nice...let us know how it goes.
Just curious...how old are you starting out? I played open last night at Floyd and a couple of guys were playing for the first time late in life...one guy said he was too old to start and when I asked him, he said he was 32.
I told him I was 38 when I started.
Whatever happened to that thread about playing hockey?

I played roller hockey growing up but never ice. I am 30. Its not like I have illusions of playing in the NHL or anything. It's just fun to play and a great way to get some exercise.

I messed around playing hockey in my parents basement for years as a kid, but didn't start playing organized hockey on ice until I was 29 (i already knew how to ice skate well enough, but then got much better once I started playing). it's the best thing I ever did. I played a few seasons of AIL at Floyd Hall and there was quite a few guys that were just starting out in their 30s or 40s.
There's an adult clinic starting April 2nd at the Rock Ice Center in Dunellen. Monday nights until June 25th. I'm probably going to try that one out if I can pick up some skates before then.
I also talked to the HNA organizer and they're running a summer league at Mennen Arena on Tuesdays and Thursdays but it's not going to include the beginner boot camp because of low registration. Hopefully the winter one will

Where is Floyd? Montclair?
Clinics aside, Floyd has the best adult open hockey in North Jersey, IMO.
Floyd Hall as an Adult Clinic....I did it in the Fall..In the fall it was 4 clinics 4 controlled scrimmages and 3 games. Cost is about $300. No pre set teams. I believe spring starts next week or the week after. It is Monday/Tues Nights games at 10 and 11...and BTW i am 47. After a few Clinic seasons you can play in the 2.0 league guys from 21-65 in that league.
Usually a couple junior players, usually at least two goalies and 16 skaters, and only $10 for over an hour.
I went to Floyd a few times and I agree, they always had people show.
Recently I've been hitting Bridgewater every Friday at noon and they have have a really good turnout for an afternoon time. Last week was roughly 22 skaters and 4 goalies.

What's the average player level? I'm a noob to ice but I played roller for years, so I can stick handle, shoot, skate and pass. It's that damn stopping thing that i still don't get.

Save yourself a lot of money, and play FREE roller hockey. Many towns have rinks and locals that play pick up games at certain times of the week. I play at a rink in Kearny on Sunday afternoons and some weeknights. It's clean, non-checking, limited equipment hockey. It's great exercise and a ton of fun.

i'd rather spend the money on ice hockey. it is how the game is meant to be played.
SteadyEddie has a point though use the free inline in between times you get on the ice.
It's really to each's own. I wouldn't play roller anymore simply because I don't enjoy playing roller anymore. Ice hockey is too much fun and I'd rather focus on other hobbies in my time away from hockey.

This is true I always felt any hockey was good hockey and the more the better.
After 5 year of playing European Style Roller/Hardball Hockey I finally found and in-line league/ice league here in Japan. It's pretty neat. Most team play both, in-line Spring-Summer, ice fall/winter.
I'll be back in North NJ July-September looking to play both and looking to do a clinic or two to brush up after years of playing with half a stick
My last couple of trips home have been mostly going to open hockey at Floyd and reading through the posts above seems like that there are fairly recent but if anyone wants to contribute any new info, a nice set of chopsticks might be in your future

floyd hall arena: Sun mornings 8AM "open" clinics 10 bucks...perfect for newbee's www.floydhallarena.com
I go to the clinics every week to get my "practice" time in. I'm at the Thursday night clinic more often than the Sunday mornings though. Thursday nights at Floyd are from 9 to 10pm. Skill level is across the board. Usually the good skaters are at the front of the drills and the weaker skaters are in the back. And severian, don't be ashamed.. if you're serious about getting better, you just need to jump in and get as much ice time in as possible.
Also, Chelsea Piers in the city offers a great ice hockey prep program that focuses on ice hockey skating. Monday nights, I believe. http://www.chelseapiers.com/srSchAdHP.htm
There's also Robby Glantz's power skating clinic. I took one of these a few months back and thought it was great! Huge focus on proper power skating form, explosive starting and "wide leg" skating. I definitely recommend it.. http://www.robbyglantz.com/
Only thing was that it was all kids. I asked them about doing an adult group and they said that we would just need to find enough adults that would be interested. They could also craft the clinics based on what you wanted to work on.. power skating, stopping, stick handling, whatever.
We were looking for some time around the end of August at Floyd Hall, but there needs to be enough interest. If anyone is interested, let me know.. shoot me an email: aleksv78@yahoo.com

Good on you. I'm going to figure out what I'll be interested and maybe shoot you a mail.
