Ovechkin in RSL

I was looking at his stats and noticed he never had a dominating year in Russia previous to coming to the NHL. I know he was 17-19 years old at the time but it strikes me as odd that a guy who scored over 50 goals in his rookie year could pot more than 13 in any season in the Russian Hockey League. Does anyone have any ideas about this? Was he not used fully by Moscow Dynamo? Ovechkin was being talked about by scouts for years, but his stats really don't seem to indicate this, so what's the reason for the disconnect here?

Not a high scoring league to start with. Plus he was a teenager playing against men (I believe its men in that league at least)

This is basically it. It's a low-scoring league, and it was a men's senior league. No teenager dominated there, because they just didn't get the first-line opportunities.

If you take a sophisticated look at the stats (such as the Projectinator), you see his numbers were very impressive for a player of his age in that league.

And next year he was a seasoned veteran destroying the NHL?

Probably an argument could be made about Ovechkin's playing style being more suited to NA game with a strict post-lockout refereeing doing him good also.
