It does when we probably already need to chunk off some of that depth to acquire a defenseman.

I find it incredible that one of the youngest if not the youngest offense in the NHL (outside of Edmonton probably) is leading the NHL in goals per game, and some of your immediate reactions are "we desperately need Rick Nash!"

Funny, I don't remember saying we need to trade the farm for Rick Nash. I'm definitely impressed with what this young lineup is doing and am wholly optimistic for the future. That said, I don't see any potential 40-goal scorers, and G needs a lethal sniper on his wing.

Why ??

The plus of having Giroux is he can turn a 25 goal scorer into a 35+ goal scorer.

JVR needs to stay healthy and he's the long term answer.

This team needs a stud defenseman replacements for Pronger/Timonen far more than a Nash type.

One reason was because they knew the math would start to work against them.

Max Talbot is going to have career highs across the board. He's not going to do that again next year.

On the flip side, Danny Briere likely will return closer to form of a 50-60-point player.

As for Wellwood, this guy is an NHL player right now. Kills penalties, defensively aware, speed burner, great hands. He's played his last regular season game for the Phantoms. A healthy Flyers roster should have this guy in the lineup, he's everything this team needs in a depth player. Aside from being a winger, he could be the Chris Kelly Boston had last year, Troy Brouwer for Chicago, etc.

Says who? You can't just proclaim this. He might have a better year next year than this one.

Its all probablitity. Briere has a higher % chance of returning to who he was, then it is for Talbot to continue to put up points going into next season. I like Talbot (the money was iffy at the beginning but he is making it + some this season) but I also dont think he will do it again or get more. It all depends on if he stays in the top 9 but I think he is better in the 4th line role (hard checking/ defensively reliable)

Exaggerated shooting percentage is the biggest tip off. He's having a career year goal scoring because he's having a career year in shooting percentage. As sa cyred said, probability. Same reasons why it's unlikely Briere will not have a career low shooting percentage next year. The assists for Briere are actually there, but chances are slim he goes the rest of his career with a span of 1 game in 3 months scoring a goal unless he gets hurt. That's why I'm kind of anticipating him heating up late in the season, which could carry into the playoffs. He had a goal the other night, but Garrison blocked an empty net.

I really like Talbot, but I'm looking forward to next season when people ask why he's not having another 20-goal season.

honestly i see matt read as wellwoods biggest obstacle to making the roster on a consistent basis. you moved him up here but i dont see first line potential there. hes a good player and i love what hes doing for us but i find it far more likely him going onto consistent production at the level hes at now. To me ranford is the guy with the best top end potential and hes a long shot, so it wouldnt surprise me to find that spot filled by a future draft pick. though i expect training camp to be really interesting over the next few years

i like the idea of that lineup but if 2 to 3 years from now our forwards are all players that we had in our system in 2012 I'll eat my hat.

Wellwood is a solid young player, but from what I have seen/read I don't think he ever breaks into the top six. I like him in the bottom six role, maybe playing on the third line in the future with either Schenn or Cooter. If they have another player like Wellwood at that time it would be a pretty solid third line moving forward.

Haha, wow. I've decided I love this kid:

Quote:
Flyers center Eric Wellwood had a great chance to help his team's chances Monday night when he had dinner with his best friend, Devils center Adam Henrique.

"We got to hang out last night. He came over to my place," Wellwood said. When asked what he cooked, he said he didn't and then realized his missed opportunity -- "I should have poisoned him, actually."

Wellwood + another 12 lbs. of muscle over the next two summers is going to be a great 3rd liner/penalty killer.

Less than 10 NHLers faster than he is. Absolute wheels.

Love his game. Smart, reliable player with blazing speed and sneaky good hands. Lavy is putting him out in crucial situations, too.

This kid needs to be up. He has been one of our best players the past couple weeks.

If we ever get healthy I want him dressed and Rinaldo scratched.

It's nice having our very own Darren Helm clone, right? Because that's precisely who Eric Wellwood reminds me of.

Very, very pleasantly surprised by his play. He's very fast, creates plays out of nowhere, good on the forecheck, seems to have a nose for the net and gets in the dirty zones, good on the PK, young, cheap, what's not to love? I think he's solidified his spot as the #12 forward when/if everyone heals up.
