I think the players were tuning out Wilson, and I think it was time for a change. With that being said, I think he had a very poor roster, and often had them overperforming, especially offensively.
Long term, I think Carlyle's system is what we need. Almost all good teams rely on strong defense, a strict defensive system, and an offense that isn't overly high risk, with plenty of cycling. Under Wilson we were playing pure run and gun hockey, dmen pinching like mad, guys taking major chances with the puck to generate offense, it lead to a lot of goals for us, but even more goals against, because we were wide open in tranisition on a regular basis. HOWEVER, Wilson didn't have much choice given the roster, our roster is full of small, soft forwards who are poorly suited to a cycle based, grinding offense. Most of our forwards can only really get it done off the rush, they suck at cycling, and suck at winning puck battles which is key to a slowed down game. I think Carlyle's system is the way to go long term, but Burke is going to have to acquire players that fit into it (over the offseason), and the players that stay are going to need to learn to score and thrive in this system.
Basically, the ultimate problem is a poorly constructed roster, and Wilson did OK with what he had, but he was losing the team regardless, and his system wasn't a good one to build around for the future, so firing him and bringing in Carlyle was IMO a good long term decision.
If Burke can't get the right players, and we suck again next year, he should be fired. It'd be one thing if we were doing an Edmonton/Pittsburgh/Washington/Chicago/etc. style rebuild, but when Burke made the Kessel trade it was clear that we were going "win now," not "build through the draft." He's failed horribly with "win now" so far, next year is IMO his last to prove that he can build a winning team in Toronto.
Not exactly Dion's fault for losing this game but man, he is just a terrible captain. WHERE has he been during this disastrous stretch? He hasn't shown any leadership along with being terrible on the ice for this stretch.
I just can't imagine the Leafs winning the Stanley Cup and Dion leading us to it.
how can a professional hockey team suck this bad all a sudden? 2 wins in last 18 games? and those 2 wins were against the habs and the oilers? pk is same again, offense has dried up, goalies suck, players showing no heart
