Remake Garon trade...

Garon+????

VS

Huet+????

If you could do this trade again which players would you trade?

Gleason, Visnovsky, Bélanger...

Be realistic...

Huh? Garon for Huet alone is fair enough for me. A couple of backups who can play. Plus we take on Bonk's albatross in exchange for the hit in potential, seems fair enough. I hardly think it's realistic to mention names like Gleason or Visnovsky who clearly don't belong in this kind of deal.

I was and still am a really big fan of Bélanger.....But realistically and at that time, I'm not sure he had the value he has now and Zednik had a better value at that time so maybe a Garon-Zednik for Huet-Bélanger could've made it.

I didn't like when Garon was traded. I wanted to keep Garon and trade Theodore back then and we could have gotten something good in return. However, now I like Huet better than Garon so I guess something good came out of it. However, Theodore is still here.

The trade is not that bad.

Garon and Huet are fairly even, slight edge Huet. Huet's contract is smaller, and he has played better, but he's older. Garon is younger, with great potential, but not living up to it yet.

A 2nd for Bonk looks bad for us, but it had the potential to be solid, and still does. Radek is a decent hockey player, and if not for his salary, would be a find addition to this team.

Would Garon have made much of a difference with the Habs? They weren't losing 6-5 games with Théo. The scores were more like 6-2, 5-1, or thereabouts, and they were being bottled up in their own end. Besides, Garon has had his own troubles while playing with a stronger team behind him.

I don't know about that. Gainey could only protect one goaly before the draft. With an impending strike, a draft deadline looming, I think he did good by getting what everyone thought was what we needed; a big center.

What do you mean he could only protect one goalie? We didn't *have* to trade Garon, we could have kept the pair.

Why does this thread even exist? Come now let's be happy Huet has worked out so far and pray Bonk wakes up offensively.

Well, before the new CBA, there would have been a waiver draft, and IIRC the rule was that if you protected 2 goalies you could protect fewer skaters. I'm not really sure though.

Another consideration (again IIRC) was that Garon is pretty close to UFA, had designs on being a starter, and was getting paid a pretty good chunk of money to play 20 games a year.

All in all it was a sensible use of assets at the time, and it looks pretty good now that Huet has emerged as a temporary saviour. The real key remains whether Carbo can get the most out of Bonk, who seems to be playing a little better and a little more consistently recently.

I have to admit, we probably could have had Belanger instead of Bonk.
I dont know about this trade, Garon wouldnt have given us more then Huet has up to now so for that part, I'm glad we have Cristo. But bonk has proven time and time again he's no more then the leeching player he was in Ottawa. At the salary he commands, BG should do everything he can to put him out of the team. If the caps going up, theres probably a team willing to try him out.

I'm new here, but I have to agree with HABit, because that's what I said since the first day of that trade. I never liked Theodore and I think he has always been overrated. It would be fun to see who else we could have gotten by trading Theodore...

Right now I prefer Huet & Bonk over Garon. Huet is not that older than Garon, maybe just a couple of years (Garon is 28 and Huet is 30). Huet is just in his prime and can play, if he wants to stay in the NHL, for many years to come. Gainey should re-sign him a.s.a.p.
