Toronto Maple Leafs need to turn page on Phil Kessel

http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey...on-phil-kessel

Quote:
Well, with the club having fallen into a deep crevice that already threatens to affect next year, as new coach Randy Carlyle is already finding his record stained by this troop of players, Burke has now fallen upon decision time for his signature player.

Fish or cut bait time. And cutting bait makes the most sense.

For starters, Kessel isn’t a Carlyle player and he’s not going to be. In this spectacular 18-game crash that began after that impressive Saturday night victory in Ottawa, Kessel has continued to produce numbers — seven goals and 11 assists — but hasn’t asserted himself in any way as a player who can carry or lead a struggling team.

He’s not to blame for the shocking state of this hockey club. No single player is. If there weren’t terms on contracts and a salary cap in place, the Leafs could just carry on with him indefinitely.

But the money matters complicate things. Kessel has two more seasons left on his current contract, after which he becomes an unrestricted free agent. So the clock is already ticking on the next commitment that will have to be made to him if he’s to remain a Leaf beyond his 26th birthday.

His cap hit is $5.4 million (all figures U.S.), but he was actually paid $6 million this season. Next year, the actual cash payment drops to $5.1 million, and then back up to $5.4 million in the final year of the deal. The contract is unencumbered by any movement restrictions until 2013-14, when a limited no-trade/no movement clause kicks in and trading him becomes more complicated.

So given what we now know about this player, after nearly three full seasons in a Leaf uniform, are you going to give him another five-year contract in 2014 with a hefty raise to something in the neighbourhood of $7 million? Or, if not, let him walk out the door for nothing as a UFA?

If we get a return equal to what Philly got for Mike Richards, I'm all for it.

Great article. The problem is, evey other team knows this. Why do you think Boston wanted to get rid of him.

The Toronto media drums are beating. Burke and his prized possession are now on the hot seat. This is going to be a lot of fun to watch unravel.

Kessel should be traded to recover the lottery pick at the very least.

Unless that lottery team is a lottery team because all of their best players were injured, then I highly doubt they're gonna trade the pick for Kessel.

Yeah his point a game pace over this 18 game slide shows why he's the problem.

What a stupid article.

Note that Cox then says the Leafs should not pursue Rick Nash.

Rebuild with kids.

This is the same Damien Cox who wrote 5 weeks ago that the Leafs would not be well served to trade their roster for Edmonton's.

Kessel is our best player by a mile. How about if we go get another really good player, instead of trading away the one we have.

You guys are idiots if you think we should trade Kessel, the kid isn't going to carry the whole team on his back.

You know times are bad when people are actually agreeing with the garbage Cox & Simmons are spewing off in their articles..

Only way Kessel gets traded is if Yakupov, Ryan or Getzlaf are coming this way. Thats the type of package it would take as Burke overpaid for Kessel and will need to justify trading him. If one of these names is involved, sure. If not which is most likely...Kessel stays a Leaf

Simmons is unreadable, Cox is more balanced. He is still a good writer, he's not paid to be a Leafs cheerleader. There are other writers if you want to read homerish fluff. But the intelligent fans and I am not saying you are not one of them like to be challenged when reading Hockey.

He likes good hockey players with character, and that sure as heck isn't Kessel. When the going gets tough, Kessel just packs it in.

If we could keep him indefinately for his current cap hit, it would be worth it. However, as Cox suggested, he'll be getting a significant raise if he stays beyond his current contract.

People who think Kessel needs to be traded are plain stupid. We need to get rid of our over PPG sniper so we can get a top 5 pick and hope to draft a guy like Kessel? Great call..

easy to rag on Kessel and his faults than blame the entire team. Always go after the teams best players because it looks like they never do enough for the team, but don't blame the rest of the teams core for their pitiful perfomrances. I doubt any package they get for Kessel will make the team stronger down the line. I've seen the lottery picks in the last few years, I doubt any would make a big a impact as Kessel would. He is what he is, one piece of the puzzle.

Satisfied or not with how any of your players are playing, a GM has to consider every way to improve his team. Kessel has had a very good season, his value has never been higher. If you think he isn't the type of player your newly hired coach can work with, there's no better time to move that player than after his best NHL season.

Most NHL coaches find a way to work with their most talented players. Certainly that's what happened with Wilson and Kessel especially this season. That didn't happen in Boston with Julien and Kessel.

And as usual with Leafs' fans versus Damien Cox, the Leafs' fans want to shoot the messenger.

And people wonder why the Brad Richards of the world never want to sign here and the team has to overpay its own solid players like Grabo to get them to stay.

Ten bucks says this article never gets written if Kessel was Canadian.

The fact that kessel has been so consistent shows that he is a keeper.
Lets get real here, the only player player capable of carrying a team is a goalie. If a forward could carry a team, then tampa would be in the playoffs.

How the **** can Kessel lead a struggling team when IT'S ENTIRE offense was anemic. In like 150+ man games outside of the first line, the last 3 lines had like 4 goals combined during the slump.

He's lost his top 10 scoring line mate and still puts up points. I agree that he's a bit on the soft side BUT if the Leafs can get a Mike Richards type player (****ing sucks Burke didn't pull the trigger considering Kadri and Kulemin haven't exactly took a step further) he would do all that dirty grunt work that would allow Kessel to RULE.

I put Kessel with guys like Kane who are just as equally soft but their centers are MUCH MUCH better than Bozak and do the hard work for such a player to succeed.

We need that for Kessel.

I would have done Kadri + Kulemin + ______ (not a 1st) for Mike Richards...

Also..I don't see Steven Stamkos along with his 50 goals and MSL and Vinny carrying Tampa to the playoffs. Offense is about 40% of the game, rest is goaltending and defense both of which have been pretty darn terrible.

Obviously people are not reading the article and not discussing why it makes sense to trade Kessel now, you wait and his value drops. If Grabo is worth 5.5, how are the Leafs going to afford 7+M for a support player that is due for raise in a few years. Plus it is obvious he is not the franchise player this team needs. But is perhaps the most tradable commodity, trading Richards and Carter didn't hurt Philly this year.

and some people make stupid arguments over something that isn't there. There has not been one complaint from Kessel or Carlyle. Bobby Ryan might be big and rugged but he certainly in the same ilk as Kessel and both of them have been able to work together.
