Fire Renney and Hire Nelson

- Big Winger in top 6 - Umberger
- Improve defense - Wideman
- Address Goaltending - Vokoun or Harding
- Khabibulin or Dubnyk traded
- Draft Grigorenko or Galchenyuk
- Trade Gagner
- Get rid of dead weight (Peckham, Potter, Barker, Omark)

I wonder if something like this to Columbus could get us Umberger and Tyutin out of Columbus; Gagner + Omark + Jones + 32nd overall for Umberger and Tyutin?

Umberger - RNH - Eberle
Hall - Grigorenko - Hemsky
Smyth - Lander - Paajarvi
Horcoff - Belanger - Eager
Petrell

Whitney - Wideman
Smid - Petry
Schultz - Tyutin
Sutton

Vokoun
Khabibulin/Dubnyk

Like you say Dubnyk is kind of a head scratcher in net. He makes saves that shows he's got the talent but seems to routinely make fairly garrish mistakes. Is that the right word for that? Not sure I'm tired today. Is there any chance his talent can be salvaged into a passable #1 goalie? Because honestly I just don't see a bonafide star goalie in the near future.
All the building blocks are there for Dubnyk to be as good as Pekka Rinne (size, agility, and foot speed). If he learns to maintain his focus and fix some positional issues he has with longer shots he can be very very good.

Whether that happens or not ... it's a toss up.

You just compared Dubnyk to Rinne.

I'm 5'6". All the building blocks are there for me to be as good as Martin St. Louis.

If you believe in yourself, you can do anything.

In fairness would Rinne have even been compared to someone of that calibre what 3 years ago? Sometimes with goalies something just clicks and they turn into fantastic players. Rinne also has the benefit of one of the more notable defensive teams in the league and that has been true for quite some time.

Unfortunately for you and Marty you are a bit more common than Dubnyk and Rinne:

In all seriousness, if you were trying to design the perfect goalie you would want him to be very tall, very agile, and very quick. There would also be an intangible that is hard to define. Right now Dubnyk has 3 of 4 of those things. Whether he ever develops the fourth is the great unknown. If he magically develops it over the next year or so our chances of becoming a cup contender increase substantially. Sadly, we are quickly running out of time to find out.

I don't know if anyone has proposed something like this, but how about:

(let me preface by saying I am a Gagner fan - been defending him for some time).

I don't think Gagner is the problem on this team. 100% effort every night, very streaky player. Seems like a very good kid.

But what if we have the 2nd overall pick? You have to think that Grigorenko > Gagner as a 2C. So what if we pick Grigorenko and then offer Gagner to the Isles/Canes/Wild/Whoever is in the 3-5 spot for their pick and use it to grab whoever is left of either Dumba, Murray or Reinhart?

I really don't think we can pass up Yakupov or Grigorenko, but the thought of having one of those stud D prospects in the system is pretty appealing as well. And even if just Gagner is not enough, maybe Gagner and something else? Or Paajarvi+?

Assuming we end up with Grigorenko or even Galcheynuk:

I would make the Gagner + Paajarvi deal in a heart beat but only if I could get Dumba or Murray. I would only go straight up Gagner for a pick that would secure Reinhart.
