will be interesting to see if they will compete right away in the new B1G
2012-2013 will be their first season in NCAA division 1. They'll compete as an independent for a season before the B1G hockey conference starts in 2013-2014.
Haven't heard much on PSU's recruiting so far, but it's going to be a huge step upward in competition for them.
I guess i'm a stubborned individual. I don't much care for all the side distractions at these new joints. I miss the aura of old barns that used to be the norm.

All of their current recruits are listed here (very bottom of the page).
Off the top of my head, the only notable prospect is Max Gardiner, a St. Louis draft pick and brother of Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner.
He played for Minnesota last year and decided to transfer, so he's currently playing for Dubuque in the USHL.
Are there any renderings of the new arena online yet?
If you feel like working for it, there are a ton of images here. It's a list of several blog posts with the arena as a topic, so not all of them have photos. But if you scroll down about a third of the way you'll start to see them. There are shots of proposed locker rooms, box suites, overall arena shots, current construction site, etc. Just keep scrolling quickly and you'll see the photos.
i played in their "old " arena in the mid 90's. it was BEAUTIFUL.. including the locker rooms. prolly only sat around 7500 though. whats gonna happen to that arena?

For the commitment site, if they have no year(such as 2013 or 2014) next to the commitment date does that mean they are expected to join the team in 2012?

Yes, that column is only used when the commitment is not for the upcoming season.
Any commitment that has a blank "years" column is for 2012-13 and onward.

I did as well, but wouldnt call it beautiful by any stretch. They had this horrid yellow tinged lighting that made me feel like I was playing in a Stanley Kubrick film.
I just have a feeling PSU is going to become a power in college hockey. They are smack in the middle of a state with tons of talent, has an alum that uses $$$ as toliet paper backing them, and has a basketball program that is dog pooh making them the focal point of the campus. Also, the fans of PSU are very loyal.
I would say in 5 years or so they will be a regular in the NCAA tourney.

you could say the same things about Ohio State tho. On a side note i wonder if any other B1G Schools will try and get a hockey team like Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, North Western, Illinois or Purdue....probably not but it would be cool to see

I would put it as doubtful, at least for the next half dozen years. Illinois and Indiana would probably be the most likely if any did.

Think that the Big Ten schools will become consistent power houses, actually, just from the increased revenues and attention that the teams are going to get from the Big Ten Network devoting an increasing amount of time to their games, which in turn will almost assuredly help them draw even more talent from hockey rich youth programs in Michigan and Minnesota especially even more so now then they already do.
As for other schools creating hockey programs, Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana are the three most rumored to be contemplating it from what I've heard, with Illinois seemingly the closest to taking the plunge (with the dual fact that the university has been thinking about constructing a replacement for the Assembly Hall for years now anyway and the somewhat substantiated rumors that they've been apparently in conversation with the founder of Jimmy John's to fund the development of a varsity hockey program and new arena), but at the very least we're probably talking about 5-10 years from now, minimum.
Illinois has had several rumors over the years, an established hockey culture, and a strong club team so people believe they are the closest. In the mid to late 2000's a private businessman tried to build a new rink on campus that would work for a USHL team, but it never worked out. This past December there were rumors the owner of Jimmy John's (headquartered in Champaign IL) wanted to fund a program. No news since then. The school is looking to remodel their basketball arena, but nothing indicates it will be capable of supporting ice. It is in the early planning stages though.
A school I am keeping my eye on is Nebraska. They don't have as strong a hockey culture there, but they do have successful USHL teams. Plus they are confirmed to be building a new basketball arena that will be capable of supporting ice. The sightlines are designed for basketball, but still will be capable. They are building a separate ice rink that will only house about 1,500 seats. It will serve primarily their club team as well as public use. While Lincoln does have a USHL team, I don't believe they will use this new facility. I'm sure it would make a nice practice rink though for a possible D1 team. Many people discount the chances of starting a program though because they believe there is an understanding with Nebraska - Omaha not to compete in hockey as it would split the fan base.

Since the new building is a dual sheet, I believe the plan is to eventually expand the football complex into the area where the Greenberg Ice Pavilion is now. I can't remember if that's immediately upon completion or not.

You cant say the same thing about Ohio St. Ohio State has a basketball program that is nationally ranked, has one of the best coaches in America, and has McDonalds All-Americans every year. PSU has a bunch of guys that eat at McDonalds and the basketball program is dog pooh and always will be. Ohio St. also has to compete against a NHL team that plays in the same arena.
Lets see how it works out but I will bet PSU hockey will be the hottest ticket wintertime in Happy Valley.

I think Penn State is going to struggle on all fronts for a while. Its name causes peoples skin to crawl right now
