Phoenix XLIV: Ignorance & Apathy (or I Doan't Know & I Doan't Care)
So as the mayor has been saying, the CoG has nothing to do with selling the team. That onus is on the NHL. And according to Bettman, the actual price the nhl is asking for is no object as he stated a few weeks back. By deduction that can only mean what it has meant since day 1..... Nobody actually has the money, nor can they borrow the money, nor can they find enough friends to come in on the deal, to buy this team.
Now it has been said they NHL could just lower the price, and I kind of agree with this, except the more I think about it, I'm not sure that matters. Assuming that none of the potential buyers has the full amount being asked in cash and they have to borrow some of that, do the banks etc really care what amount I'm trying to borrow if it's a bad investment to them?
Or if it's just a matter of getting enough people together to form a group to buy the team, and I can't do that, that tells me as well that nobody sees it as a good investment.
It sounds like COG is setting up the NHL to take the fall if the Coyotes move. Really though, they should be thanking the NHL for allowing them more time than they ever deserved. So many potential owners came along during the three years, but it was COG that always threw up obstacles that ultimately deterred potential owners away.

The COG should thank the NHL for taking $50 million of their money?
While the COG blames some of the responsibility for this mess for not renegotiating with Moyes way back when, but since then the only logical complaint is they have perhaps tried too hard to get someone to buy the Coyotes.

And did the $50M cover all the losses the NHL had as a result of operating the team in the COG for the past two seasons?

I told ya so. I was right all along!
And did the $50M cover all the losses the NHL had as a result of operating the team in the COG for the past two seasons?
And did the NHL try to actually make a profit by marketing the team and managing the arena properly? Everyone scoffed when Moyes said he was losing 40 mil a year, saying it was Moyes' stealing from the yotes, etc. Well, how did the NHL do? Lost the same amount as moyes.

No - the total losses seem to come out to 30-40 million per year. So COG has covered the majority, but not all, of the losses.
Look, I have no love for Mayor Scruggs and Co. I can't believe I wasted several hours of my life watching COG council meetings this time last year. But to say this entire situation is the fault of Glendale and that the City put up obstacles to a sale just isn't true.

Based on whats out there in the public domain insofar as what the leagues "claimed" then ya, losses of "Moyiesian Proporions" as Danny Gallivan mightve articulated. You
buying their claims?. Im not.
Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs said she didn’t know enough to provide an update on the search for an owner, but the National Hockey League maintains it’s still in contact with Glendale officials.
Scruggs says she isn’t one of them.
"Now, this would be a perfect time to provide you with an update on the Phoenix Coyots, but I won’t be doing that because I don’t know anything other than what has already been reported by the media,” Scruggs told those gathered at the Glendale Civic Center for her Thursday speech. “But, we continue to hope the National Hockey League will find a new owner that will bring stability to this franchise."

...
“We are not in control and quite honestly, I’m kind of tired of everybody pointing to us and making comments that the city of Glendale can’t get the job done,” she said.
Pretty much what I figured. Gary Bettmans been telling Porkies again. "In touch with the city daily" huh?. What, like checking in on the Weather Channel just out of curiosity to see what the temperature is at Sky Harbor and wishing you were there?.
....damn these handheld units btw. Dont try this alone after a few drinks kids.

Not a drinker myself but I hope you enjoy our international holiday, my friend.
Lisa Halverstadt's latest FB post Friday afternoon:
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly provided an update on Phoenix Coyotes ownership talks on NHL Home Ice today.
Here's what he had to say: “It continues to be a work in progress. We continue to have discussions. I had a couple conference calls on the Phoenix situation today. We continue to be in touch with potential investors who want to own the franchise in Glendale and there continues to be multiple groups in that regard. When we get closer to a closing, we can schedule a closing, we can transition ownership. Obviously we can make an appropriate announcement. The fact that we haven’t made any announcements should indicate that we’re not quite there yet. We remain hopeful. We remain confident but we don’t have it done yet.”

Just more of the same old obviously coached talking points. This is all straight out of the Burston-Marstellar PR 101 Playbook... and no ones calling them out on it.

I think no one calls them out, K, because no one's listening anymore.
Everyone knows it will be the same old BS from the NHL until the Coyotes either win the Stanley Cup or are eliminated from the playoffs, and then the real news will come about what happens next season, or the season after that if there's a work stoppage next year.
However, Scruggly's comments that she's not getting updates pretty much says it all.
Ya, it really does just re-confirm my already well below the equatorial line of opinion about this leagues ability to play it straight Mork. People deserve better and when I read the same talking points coming out of Dalys mouth as Bettmans, well, I kinda wish Aliens would descend.... oh, wait, thats right, theyve been here since time immemorial.
