Would Schultz be interested in signing with the Rangers, I wonder? I get the McD/Stepan factor, and playing for a winner is always appealing, but I wonder how much young D-men look at the Ranger roster and wonder if there would be space for them in the top 4.

I would love to see Slats steal him away, no doubt. Would be a perfect fit on the right side.

Most teams will be going after this kid, but I think with our defensive depth, he'll end up signing elsewhere.

Concerning Sauer; isn't his older brother out of the NHL because of a concussion he was unable to come back from? Genetically more vulnerable to concussions?

lol why in the world is Erixon a goner? He's playing very well in the minors and earned a call up. Pencil Erixon in long term. They gave up a lot to get him in a few 2nds and Horak who is in the NHL.

No, Kurt does not have PCS. go check the first Sauer thread where I posted links to stories about his condition.

Without knowing much about the players involved, if they're going after a college FA, wouldn't the be better off going for a winger like Abbott or Brown?

Not that they can't do both.

On the one hand, our young defensive depth would make it harder for Schultz to make the team, but on the other hand, the Rangers have shown, much more than most other teams, an ability and willingness to bring along young defensemen quickly and with much success, which should be a selling point.

While the overall depth on the Rangers'defense might appear to make the Rangers a less attractive spot for Schultz, there is a great opportunity for Schultz to step in right away on the rightside. Sauer right now is an unknown, while McIlrath is a few years away from being ready. Plus, as others have already stated, the Rangers have shown a willingness to play young D-men at the NHL level.

McD, Dz, and Schultz makes Erixon a redundant part.

Would need a replacement for Sauer in every way. Physical defenceman with a mean streak

Enter Dylan McIlrath

stay at home guys like Girardi, Staal and McIlrath paired with McD, MDZ and Schultz

no room at the inn for Erixon

That's assuming McIlrath pans out. And he won't be seeing NHL ice for at least another season or two.

Signing a guy like this lets you trade something away from the current D core without losing much. Sauer has no value. Staal, McDonagh, DZ, or Erixon can be moved to bring in a big time forward. Girardi can't be moved being the only guy current on the right side in the longterm plans. McIrath becomes expendable to a point as well.

Also, and offensively skilled D? Please come to NY.

Still think we are going to need a more physical guy for that 3rd pairing than Erixon.

but that's just my opinion

As a Rangers and Badgers fan, this would make me very happy. Sucks to be on Anaheim's end though.

Because people don't realize he's far and away one of our two best prospects.

Burke drafted him. I'm sure Toronto is a real threat to sign him.

This sounds fairly reminiscent of Gilroy... and Heikkinen... and Pock...

They're all bound for stardom!

Not really. Gilroy was a 27 year old undrafted player. Schultz is a solid prospect that can basically jump ship out of Anaheim and become a free agent. Any team that can absorb the cap bonus is going to go after him.

Of course. But for every bust there's a boom.

Wasn't Gilroy supposed to be a star also?

Not sure Slats should go all out for another defenseman. Erixon and McI are developing nicely.

Gilroy? We're bringing up Gilroy as a comparable?

He's a stud PMD prospect that is possibly not signing with the team that drafted him. He isn't some journeyman college UFA.

One was a 25 year old overage walk on.

One is a 21 year old that has been one of the top offensive defensemen in the NCAA two years running.

Do the differences really need to be explained further?
