Where's Bourque? Are you trying to forget it happened?

Agreed. And a few tinkering moves. We're not gunna be the Penguins- we didn't luck out and get handed Malkin and Crosby for free.

If the Habs win a cup, it will be the way Boston did. Team depth, character, a great goalie, a solid coach, and playoff chemistry/momentum.

A top pick this year will be a lot of fun and a good piece (not unlike Seguin for Boston). But keep in mind that this team isn't TOO much different than the one that finished 6th last year without Markov and Gorges and didn't have either, as well as Cole and Pacioretty against Boston.

What they missed this year is veteran depth on defence, guys like Wiz and Hamrlik to carry the load, a bad start, and poor production from some key forwards. Which, admitedly, is a lot of things to be missing. But at their best, I think they were better than a 15th place team. This off season, they need to OWN the draft to make this dismal year worthwhile. The Habs have also been good at picking up quality veterans for their bottom pair or bottom six forwards, through FA or Trade. Hopefully that continues. Sign these playesr in the offseason instead of burning picks on them at the deadline.

Look at Ottawa, New York, etc. They're not world beaters. But they're good teams, though I don't necessarily see them as miles better than the Habs. This years results are poor for a lot of reasons that we all know, that we've all beaten to death. Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. And the team wasn't quite re-inforced well enough in some places to carry through (though, with Martin at the helm they probably could've played their way into the 8th seed).

But the framework of the team isn't that bad. The pre-season magazines will lump the Habs in the bottom of the East the same way they did to the Senators this year. But this team can be back in the pack in the East next year VERY quickly with quality coaching, a good start to the season, health, the triple low-five duo, and like all teams - a bit of luck.

We do have lots of money spent unwisely, but Cole's contract isn't one of those places.
