Difference is they had a decent defense and had MAF. Oilers have Devan dubnyk with barker, sutton, peckham and potter playing around 20 mins a night.

I have said it before and I still believe drafting BPA is a flawed system. Either build a defense around a elite young dman or expect to be right back here next year.

You picked out there worst guys and ignored that

Petry, Smid, Whitney, Schultz are looking like next year's top 4

Only Smid has been a regular because Whitney's been hurt; Schultz was just acquired and Petry just made the NHL. Highly doubtful the 4 guys you picked out are gonna average major minutes going forward.

You're also ignoring the potential return for Gagner if Grigo is drafted plus the development of others.

If you think the Oil's plan is to draft a guy who will make real impact to the top 4 of their D in 2012-13, you're dreaming. Even if they are in the NHL the real impact of Murray, Dumba etc is 2 years away minimum, look at Larson and Hedman.

What return is a small 2nd line centre like Gagner going to get anyways? Not to many teams out there that dont have guys just like him in their farms just waiting to hop into a 2nd line role.

Yes 2 years away, but developing grigorenko in the hopes of trading him for the defensive help they need will take longer and comes with other problems.

Having a coach that can be tough with his players is about the last thing that is important, if it even is..
What does he plan to instill as a system?
What's his vision?
What type of team would he like?
How will he incorporate the youngsters?
etc...
Those are the actual important questions to ask. Whether he can scream at players is pretty irrelevant.

You're saying Therrien had none of that? You're determined in your hate.

Therrien did all this. He gave the Pens a work ethic when these guys had no guidance. Hell when they lost Fleury for a long stretch when he was there, he had them play superb D team system and they surprisingly performed. I love Therrien because he had an ideal mix of motivation and intelligence. And I liked how he adapted during a game like a good general.

Hartley is a tough veteran coach too, so is Michel Bergeron. There's more to it than just that, and there's plenty of teams that are good with different style of coaching.

Hartley won the cup, Bergeron was a good coach who had a long career in the NHL.

If Gagner isnt getting a trade return, you just proved that they need help at both positions, and therefore should pick the BPA at either C or D based on who their scouts rank higher.

As for the d meaning they are headed for a top 5 pick next year; Murray or any D they draft wouldn't have a big enough impact as an 18 year old to change that anyway. Expecting a rookie fresh out of the draft to fix a defence immediately is a little much.
