Did Peg fans jeering of opposing players backfire last night?
I'm on record, as a long long time ranger fan who jeered Potvin for too many years, to supporting the jet fan zealousness.
The question everyone is asking this morning, did their isolating individual players, like crosby's better, finally backfire last night with the jeering of Eric with "Jordan's better"?
Winnipeg fans kept up their jeering chants of the visiting team's best player, this time yelling to Staal, "Jordan's better" in reference to his brother who plays for Pittsburgh.
"That was fun," said Staal, who scored his 20th and 21st goal of the season. "I mean, Jordan's good, but I don't know if he's better. It was fun to hear that, and it was fun to score a few and get the apple on the game winner.
"I think they probably regret the chants they were making as the game went on, started to hesitate and we stuck with it and were rewarded with a big win.". From tsn this morning.
Did the fans, instead of their usual great job of rising the level of the pegs, focus too long on the opposing star?
I guess it could end up hurting them sometimes, and it seems like this is a case of that. Teams are always worrying about giving the other team "bulletin board material" because it fires them up. Well it seems like the fans of the Jets are giving other teams bulletin board material, so to speak.
Their fans are starting to make a habit out of that, jeering the opposing team way too early. They were chanting Bryzgalov's name while up by only a goal or two awhile back, before the Flyers made the comeback and won the game.
That being said, I would hope that NHL players wouldn't need opposing fans booing to play their best, but you never know.
To think that every home game is a guaranteed win because of the noise is unrealistic. Did Eric rise to a new level because of the jeering? I doubt it, he's a very tallented player and every person in the crowd yesterday knows that. He had a great game and bit us in the butt (although I think Ladd bit us the hardest with his 2 giveaways that resulted in goals). For him to say that the fans probably regret it now ... no I doubt it. The MTS Centre is a fun wild place and the noise has won us more games this year than it cost us. How does the saying go.....Live by the Sword, ya you know the rest.

exactly my point... Most nights you raise the level of your players...
They were jeering Eric Staal...it's not like they were jeering some scrub who somehow turned into Crosby for the night and lit it up against them. What's a better way to shut fans up by not only scoring when they've singled you out with their jeers, but for your team to actually comeback and win the game and hurt the playoff chances of the home team?
Stall was on fire WAY before the Jordans better chants started!! WITCH was only half the crowd anyway... The Jets played like Crap and we have lost all season too teams that are below us in the standings
I think that fans should be involved in games. It makes it that much better to watch, attending a game with little to no cheering is boring. I think the best part about the NFL is attending the games, the atmosphere makes the games that much better. Regardless of whether it is cheering or booing.
Eric Staal is always streaky anyways, he is never really a consistent scorer but all of the sudden will score 10 points in 5 games.
I don't know if I'd say it backfired, but you're going to look a little silly any time you ride the guy who ends up burning you. That just goes with the cheering/jeering territory.
I love it. If Buffalo fans don't like something, they just start booing. I'd love to hear
some creative chants.
The best that I'd heard recently was against Philly in last years playoffs. They had switched between Boucher and Leighton for a couple of games in a row. Durign game 5 Leighton was chased and the Buffalo crowsd chanted "Who's your goalie?" for a little bit.
The "Jordon's better" chant was pretty minor last night. It only came from a few pockets and certainly wasn't sustained. It was way down the list in how loud chants get at the MTS centre. I find it hard to believe Eric would have decided not to compete without it, since he was the best player on the ice since the opening faceoff. The reason the Jets lost was poor play from their top line and top D pairing who were a combined - 12.

As a fan that sucks but it's kinda funny how things turn out like that. Just comes with the territory of cheering/mocking during a game. I remember one game where the Habs were leading the Leafs by two goals so the Habs fans felt pretty confident about the game and started singing Ole Ole. Leafs killed the chant when they scored and cut the lead to 1. Then the Habs fans started doing it again and the Leafs killed it again with the tying goal that took the game into OT

The question isn't whether Eric would have decided not to compete....
The question is, as he implies himself, did the chant loud enough for him to hear, RAISE his level of competition?
The way I look at it is, you live by the sword, you die by the sword. Home has been good to us (23-11-4), we've been taunting, jeering, heckling, etc. the opposition since game 1. This isn't any worse than anything else Jets fans have done, in my opinion. We boo players, taunted Goaltenders, etc. It is what it is.
Staal seemed to feed off of it and play better. He's not the type of player you should direct that stuff at and certainly not when he was already playing really well.
Ovechkin was fair game and it was funny but sometimes after people get a laugh they overdo it looking for another.

Not to burst your bubble, but game 5 was in Philadelphia
Can't believe Jets fans have turned into those kinds of fans. Always a nice opportunity for the opposing team to shove it in their faces, and Eric did just that.

Did they wake a sleeping dog?
Yes.
And it was kind of lame anyway. Seemed like the Sunday fans trying to match the Friday fans... and failing. The real hurt was the lack of sound defensive play on breakaway though.
And you've got question if the Jets fans who spent their energy taunting Staal had spent the same energy in supporting the Jets, would the collapse had happened?
