The Devils must feel they can push the Rangers around a little bit. DeBoer wanted to start the game off with a rough ant tumble style because he must have felt it suited his team better than the Rangers. It backfired.

Which Ranger was it that said after the 4-1 Devils win over the Rangers in NJ that "they looked like they wanted to kill us out there tonight."

Maybe DeBoer took that quote and ran with it? Thinking he could start the game with some physical energy and get the Rangers scared.

I agree though... backfired.

It was Boyle.

Not a big fan of the staged fights. I don't mind them when they occur naturally as part of the flow of the game. This one was a little different though, it did have the feel of setting the tone of intimidation. Worked out for the Rangers in this instance.

I am not sure but both teams play a similar, in-your-face style. Its possible DeBoer thought that was the best way to swing the game in their advantage. Both teams are filled with BIG guys. I was just a little upset Scott was not playing considering the Rangers gave up a 5th rounder for him for these types of games......

im not reading the whole thread, so i dont know if it has been mnentioned, but from what i gather, Torts was upset simply because the lineup submitted before the game wasnt the lineup that was there for the game. i dont know how true it is, but i guess in some way i can see why Torts was PISSED.

i loved how the NBCSN camera was right on him as he was ripping into DeBoer from behind the bench. it was a thing of beauty.

Torts was yelling to get the team going, if he stood there with his arms crossed not speaking through the opening brawl, he'd look like a doofus. I'd rather fight Ryan Carter than an angry John Tortorella.

Pierre said the both coaches were yelling but the camera showed DeBoer just standing there with a blank look on his face basically saying "holy moly I should have stayed in Florida this is way too intense." I don't think he's ever experienced something like that before.

I also don't buy that the submitted lineup was not the one that came out on the ice. With the rules, Torts gets to see DeBoer's lineup in advance and even if DeBoer is to change that, the refs have to sign off on it and Torts has to be notified.

Staged fights are stupid. I have a hard time lumping this in with a staged fight, though. Two teams who obviously despise each other, both trying to get the upperhand in momentum and vent frustration. None of the Rangers who fought were useless goons, either. Whatever it was, I ****ing loved it. I was going nuts that entire first period, especially since Bickel offered Carter's blood up to the hockey gods in tribute.

Staged fights are when something happens in the game and two guys, neither of whom were involved in the original incident and both considered goons, fight as a sort of proxy fight for whatever happened earlier.

This wasn't that at all. This was two teams who don't like each other starting the game with a big **** you to one another. Awesome, sets the tone for the game.

Dave maloney stated on the radio that Deboors original line up card didnt have cam jansens in it and minutes before the game he asked for permission to insert him .. That's why torts was so pissed .. I was also told if cam played then Scott was dressing. Devils pulled a fast one and it blew up on them

Henrik Lundqvist did say that while he couldn’t hear Tortorella yelling at DeBoer on the bench, Tortorella was plenty fired up and loud in the Rangers’ room before the game about the Devils’ lineup choices.

Ah. DeBoer also announced that his lineup would be last minute made at warmups and either Janssen or Bernier were sitting. He said that at the morning skate that it would be game time decision which one played. Maybe that was the problem?

Rangers win when Prust fights in the first two minutes, Rangers lose when John Scott is in the lineup. What happens when both are true?

Tried to spark his team by starting and losing 3 fights and giving up a goal in the 1st minute, what a loser...

The line brawl was awesome.

Not necessarily "staged fights" per say, but just awesome.

I can think of a couple reasons why Torts might not have been happy--1) as the Devils poster stated Janssen and Boulton aren't very good players and there's a good chance either or both won't be in the lineup once the playoffs come around. All of Rupp, Bickel and Prust will and Torts wouldn't want them to get hurt in a staged event. 2) playing to the referees. As in 'look what this guy is doing'.

The one thing we can take out of this is we have a new face-off specialist in Stu Bickel. Guy has never lost a draw in his life.

I honestly believe that it was just fake outrage by Torts and he was just trying to fire up a team that has played some flat games recently (including the one at the Rock). For the first time in a long time, I don't worry about this teams toughness. This was strictly a motivational move by Torts. Thats my 2 cents.

This wasn't a staged fight.

Staged fights are when 2 players more or less have a matchup scheduled before the game started.

This happened because deboer wanted to start ****, and torts can't let the other coach pull intimidation tactics on him.

fights, generally speaking, are a waste of time. they don't really impact the game one way or the other. tonight was debateable, but, if they removed fighting altogether from hockey, i wouldnt be upset at all.

Even if you don't think the crowd has an effect on the game, fights certainly gets the players going. There's a reason that well over 90% of players in player polls don't want fighting abolished. Also the threat of a fight from a great fighter prevents teams from taking liberties against star players.
