Sabres sign Phil Varone to entry-level deal

Quote:
Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced that the team has signed forward Phil Varone to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Varone (510, 186 lbs., 12/4/90) currently leads the Rochester Americans (AHL) with 43 points (8+35) and two shorthanded goals in 63 games this season. His 35 assists rank him fourth among all AHL rookies and tie for 15th-most among all skaters. Varone is ranked 12th among AHL rookies in total scoring.

Glad they decided to give him an NHL deal.
After taking a little time to adjust to professional hockey, he's been really good.

Nice of them to actually put out a press release this time too.

He was the standout camp-invite at Dwyer last July; for me, at leasy. He's a good player.

He's 21, drafted 5th round by the sharks, he came to Rochester this year and got about 5 points in his first 20 games and than when buffalo got injuries and we took the Americans players he got a bigger role and he's been tearing it up since than

Yup, no risk here. At worst the guy is a body for our AHL team.

Does this year count as year one of the deal?

I believe that at this point in the year they can sign contracts that take effect next season. Thus they can sign prospects to deals, but they can play in the AHL on a ATO during the playoffs without burning a year on the deal.

I'd assume that this contract begins during the 12-13 season and that he'll stay on his AHL SPC for the rest of the season.

In fact, even without the terms being announced, you can assume that the contract starts next season because of the lack of an AHL transaction.
If the contract was for this year, he'd show up as being released from his SPC and added on loan from Buffalo, but that didn't happen.

I'll second this. He was everywhere in that camp. Really glad they got him signed.

Love it. I assume his AHL contract was 1 year, so this keeps a good player in Rochester and also gives the Sabres a guy who should be solid as a call-up.

Good. The kid has come on, unlike his Otter running-mate Szydlowski who has struggled to find his game. Just in time too for Zip and Ruck to run another poll right guys? Guys? Guys??

Contract numbers are finally out: $570,000 x 3, $45,000 of it is a signing bonus each year.
He is also likely going to be paid twice as much as he was at the AHL level this season.
