Rather have Doughty. I hate Stamkos. I'm more upset we wasted another 1st on Teubert. Hindsight is always 20/20 with past drafts but I distinctly remember on draft day calling for Myers to be picked.
Doughty is still a fantastic talent. I would rather have Stamkos, but Doughty has the skill to be a multiple Norris trophy winner. And has already proven himself at the highest level possible.
Like cns said, you want to talk about hindsight in the 2008 draft. Imagine this team with Karlsson, Myers, Gardiner, Del Zotto or Sbisa on D or Eberle who could have been that long sought after elite winger for Kopitar. Even a guy like Colborne who could step in as the Kings #3 center next season. All taken within 10 picks of the Kings baffling pick of Colten Teubert.
I will say though, they hit a homerun with VV in the 2nd round. Wonderful pick there, and awesome that they were able to get him to come over right away and keep him away from the KHL.

Based on the rankings you may be right, but I think had the Kings not taken him he might have tumbled. A lot of teams are hesitant to draft such limited players in the first round.
I am no scout, but I saw this kid play in the ECHL the year after he was drafted and he was just pitiful, especially for a first round pick. I wondered why the Kings sent him to the ECHL (almost unheard of with first round picks) but after watching him play it was apparent he was nowhere close to being even an AHL caliber player.
I was happy to see him moved while he still had a little bit of value, although I think the big thing EDM was getting back in that deal was the first rounder.
I would rather have Stamkos. Already gets it at such a young age as indicated by his working with Gary Roberts in the off season. Doughty should take note.

I distinctly recall Bob McKenzie alluding to Carolina being prepared to take Teubert at #14 (they took Zach Boychuk instead). Wasn't super thrilled with the Teubert pick at the time, but thought he fit in a specific spot with Doughty/Johnson/Hickey on board. With previous drafts, stay at home D tend to be the guys that get overslotted in hindsight.
Teubert was more or less ranked around that area all year. He helped lead Canada to Gold at the U-18s and led the club with a +8. It's not unusual for a player's stock to rise as the tourney is the last on ice impression that some players get to make. From the U-18, Jake Allen vaulted himself from a relative unknown to a high 2nd rounder.
I like to speculate if we had Lombardi and the new post-Al Murray scouting staff, how we would have drafted at the 2003 draft.

Dean has never taken a winger in the first round, even in years where he had multiple first rounders, so it's safe to say Brown would not have been drafted. And Perry and Eriksson would not have been given a serious look with either of the two later picks because they would not be valued properly.

Then with the two later picks, probably another d-man like Danny Richmond, Shawn Belle or Kevin Klein and then one of POS or Danny Fristche who both were centers projected as first round picks. Lombardi is not exactly a wizard when it comes to first round picks, but I am pretty confident in saying the Kings would have drafted one of Bergeron, Weber or Carle with that second round pick instead of Pushkarev who was anything but a Lombardi style player.
The massive miss at the 2003 draft set this franchise back a good 5-7 years and cost Taylor his job.
