Its actually you and other Burke supporters that believe Leafs future success lies in the ability for the GM to go out and find Sundin "quality" players via trade/UFA. While agreeing these types of players are few and far between and that doesn't even mean they're available to be had either.

A player like Sundin has to be on the market first, right?
Despite arguing Kessel is in esteemed company, you're also quick to point out that he doesn't have the current ability to carry a team which is a contradiction, because its that very quality that separates him from esteemed players that can. So Kessel being 4th in league scoring behind Malkin is separated by a lot more (quality) than just the actual point differential.

By that logic, Stamkos is undeserving as well.

Nice if you included the context of that quote because it was in response to someone else placing Carey Price and PK Subban on a higher level than Kessel and I am well aware of the difference between Malkin and Kessel.

Burke does need to get lucky, he was never in position to draft Tavares and in all of the other drafts while he has been with the Leafs there was no franchise centreman available even if they finished last every year including this one. Had there been a 2006 or 2003 type of crop or a Sidney Crosby maybe his strategy would have been different.

8 games left, nyr, phi, car, buf x2, tbay, devils and finishing season in mtl. I predict 1 win against car, 1 against buf and a shootout with mtl. 5 points should get us a 4th overall pick... Hopefully better!

I have a feeling that if the NHL does rig the lottery for certain teams then they might have a soft spot for us Leafs fan and let us win the lottery for once since we actually have our 1st this year.

If Leaf Nation needs to sit around and wait 18 years for a player like him to shake loose, then this Burke rebuild is going to need to be measured in decades.
Wait a sec did it not also take a #1 overall drafted star talent to land us Mats?

LMAO, GB needs the 1s to go to franchises that are dieing at the gate.

Don't be shocked to see us bumped lower in the draft by a gate struggling franchise.

With our bad luck Burke would probably package the 1st overall for a 9th and a 17th in the first round citing, "no appreciable difference in talent from 1 to 20"

Burke would trade down on the advice of his scouting staff if it did happen.

Yup, took a #1 overall Wendel Clark to land a #1 overall Mats Sundin. Without Wendel there is no Sundin Era in Toronto.

When a big name star hits the market and they seldom do, then its time to fish or cut bait.. However when you want to go successful fishing, you have to have the right bait to land the big one as the competition will be fierce.

If he did seriously, he would need armed guards around him at all times.
Only thing id trade #1 for is an established, young, highly skilled center ala Tavares or duchesne
