The Jackals showed early they wouldn't allow the Nailers to push them around.
Jordan Pietrus fought with Philip Sameulsson after the Wheeling defenseman slashed him near the Nailers net in the first period.
"They're a good team, but there's no doubt we don't like each other," Radja said.
Quote:
Elmira defenseman Craig Rivet was particularly feisty, challenging Peter Merth late in the first period. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Merth didn't take up the offer, and Rivet was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Rivet didn't allow Andrew Hotham to back off, as he pummeled the 6-2, 190-pounder late in regulation behind the Elmira net.
Rivet said his challenge to Merth was in response to Merth's hit on another Jackal.
"It was more to make sure someone doesn't take liberties with our players," Rivet said.
Quote:
The confrontation with Hotham seemed more personal, as Rivet described Hotham as a mouthy, cheap-shot artist.
"He thought there was just one minute to go, so he'd take some liberties," Rivet said. "He two-handed me (with his stick). I don't forget about things like that."
Then the trigger:
Quote:
Demkov and Delmas tangled in overtime, with Delmas getting whistled for roughing and Demkov for slashing.
After Demkov beat Delmas in the shootout, the two teams had to be separated while leaving the ice.
So the 2 parties involved had a beef with one another in OT. Demkov showed Delmas and the Wheeling bench up, more so Delmas. Made a big deal out of the celebration. Given what I saw in person and the fact these 2 had an encounter in OT I can understand why. It was hilarious watching the Wheeling radio guy throw a fit in thre press box. I actually heard his call of the situation last night, funny stuff. Sounded like sour grapes and a sore loser. When i was coming home I heard our guys call of it and he barely acknowledged it.
This brought back shades of the good old days versus Adirondack. The game itself wasn't well played being a three in three but the intensity made up for it. Disappointed we aren't going to see these guys in our barn again.
There easily could have been a brawl as there was a mini scrum of sorts, it definitely got heated but I have to give the officials and all involved props from preventing an ugly scene breaking out.
I have a feeling someone is going to be a target Next Sunday. Actually 2 people, Rivet and Demkov. Of course, I definitely think Hotham will be a target for our boys. Maybe Samuelsson(but I suspect he will probably be back in WBS soon)

I do not think that Samuelsson will be back in WBS. They have a little bit of depth on the backline right now. Despres, Strait, Bortuzzo, Sneep, Grant, Picard, and Mormina are probably the top 7 for WBS right now.
Anyway, this game reminded me of the old ECHL days. Chippy and intense. Both teams are fighting for the division lead. They do not seem to like each other. Sunday should be a good game. What fun. I may have to get tickets.

Would go down but it's a Sunday, would go to the last game but i'm not sure if it will matter much yet. Our schedule on paper looks easy but you never know.
Why has WBS been sending him down for a game then calling him right back up most of the time?
I wish the ECHL was still like this but this is the exception. now a days so many times you see a guy on one team get roughed up around the net area with some of the other teams pplayers and often his teammates don't come to the rescue for much of anything.

WBS has been sending him down for a game and calling him back up in order to try and get him playing time. Right now he is probably the 8th best defensmen in WBS so they send him down to get playing time. Then there is the brief run on injuries at the NHl level so Strait, Despres get called up, and the Nailers lose Samuelsson.
it has been a great division chase between Elmira and Wheeling this season. The sad part is that it might be the last one. I am glad to have seen this turn out to be a nice little rivalry. Heck, I might even want to see it continue next season with a local buyer taking over Wheeling and somebody for Elmira.
I agree that this is the exception. However, how sweet would it be for the two teams to meet up in the playoffs. Bad blood and a healthy dislike already. Let the fun begin. ECHL old school. Sometimes the barbarian in me needs to be released.

Makes sense. Speaking of the NHL do the rosters expand for the playoffs so guys can be brought up to see what a playoff run is like?
This is true. Have no idea what either situation is. Have heard a deal with a buyer for the Nailers was close but nothing was finalized. As for us i've heard too much and honestly nobody knows other then a court battle is afoot. Hearing that should take time and Afr may be allowed to be operator still while they settle it.
That would be fun, it would likely be in the 2nd round. I think we will get through as long as we don't play florida. Still think we can beat them but they played us in a way nobody else has. It's either gunna be Florida, Cincy, Chicago or Reading for us. Outside shot at SC. Wheeling is either gunna get Gwinnett or Greenville it looks like.
I think the rosters do expand. It does not in reality, but the cap is no longer an issue. So teams call up players from the minor league teams when the team is eliminated from the playoff. These players can not technically play (Injury emergency is one loophole.) However, they do practice with the team and get to travel with the team. It is one way to get some playoff experience for guys.
I wish you the best regarding the Jackal situation. It would be a shame for an area to lose its team due to the misdeeds of management. Pittsburgh nearly lost the Penguins due to the mismanagement of Baldwin. I understand that. Hopefully, the Wheeling situation works out as well. I would hate to see both teams put together such a spirited fight for the division and then disappear.
I seriously do hope to meet Elmira in the playoffs. I do fear having to play either Gwinnett or Greenville. I think that Wheeling has a good record against both teams, but the last time they played was much earlier in the season. It would be interesting to talk to you if they meet in the playoffs.

Was that Harold Baldwin? The whalers guy? I mean Connecticut Whale?
Our situation is just nothing is known and it won't be until an investigation. Not feeling good about it right now But I have nothing to base that off of.
As for the Wheeling situation I find myself not feeling good about it. The night before we were told a deal was done...or close but not signed and finalized. It's been about 3 weeks and we have heard nothing. It shouldn't takle 3 weeks to finalize a close deal, should it? I think either Rine fooled us all again or someone backed out.
I was told something today by a fellow ECHL fan:
Quote:
I know for most ECHL teams, the league actually owns the team names, logos and colors, and then licenses them back to the team. This allows the league to sign merchandising deals with national companies, and prevents the problems that happen when an owner has to be kicked out, or doesn't pay his bills, and the new owner wants to use the same name/logo.
I'm not sure this is the case with Elmira, since the name and logo existed before they joined the ECHL, but it is the case with most teams - so it is at least possible that another owner could come in and be able to use the Jackals name and logo.
That would change a lot regarding the potential future. It could be Afr's though. Then we would have to start over if theres an arena/team wanter.
As for the playoffs i'm hoping. That would be fun. The South Division has me scared though, easily have the best teams out East.
Yeah, Greenville had a rough start and has since rolled and Wheeling has done the opposite. It's tough to gage, we just dealt with that against Florida this weekend.

Yes it was Howard Baldwin. The same guy. I do not have a great love for the man.
The not knowing is very difficult. We went through it with the Penguins several years back just regarding the new arena. Another example of Baldwin shafting the Penguins. When Pittsburgh built the new football and baseball stadiums, the Penguins were asked about a new arena. At the time Baldwin said no, the taxpayers have enough to pay for. The rumor is that there was a gentleman's agreement for the city to not offer too much resistance when a new arena was needed/desired. Of course by the time that came to be new politicians were in office. The Penguins came much closer to going to Kansas City than most people believe. Only the fact that Ron Burkle was a major campaign donor to Hilary Clinton got anything resolved. (Ed Rendell, the PA governor at the time, was a big naysayer on the deal. He also was a huge Clinton supporter so read what you want into the deal.)
Anyway, I wish the best of luck for Elmira. Regarding Wheeling, I am like you. I am very negative about the team remaining there. In Rines' defense (which you will not hear me say often), if the lawyers are invovled right now, it could take a while. Of course, I also suspect that anybody looking over the team's books will have a lot of questions. You know my opinion of the Brooks Borthers.
The South Division is just amazing. Every team is going to make the playoffs. That is ridiculous. I almost would like to see Wheeling tank so they could avoid one of those teams. Is it just me or does that seem to be the Wheeling way these last few seasons? Start off well and then slump in the stretch run. I think the same thing happened last season. That is why Rines was so up in arms over the WBS Penguins calling up players and sending CPZ to Cincy.

Had no idea the Wheeling situation might be court worthy. I hear Wheeling fans refer to them as the "Crooks" Bros. I guess you culd be right though. Regarding Elmira I just got this tip:
Quote:
Afr family files lawsuits against Robbie Nichols, Donald Lewis and also chemung county. Seems that the money to pay all bills was in the accounts to pay them, but for some reason they were not paid. They say the money was used to fund Dunn Field Project.
Knowing several folks in the bank industry I can tell you bank accounts do not lie...very interesting twist.
Really not sure who I want to see round 1. it's almost likely a Southern team. I would laugh though if none of the 4 represented the East. If Reading gets the 8th seed 3 atlantic teams get in.

With a sale like this, I was thinking like when a business goes up for sale. The lawyers get involved and have to determine who is responsible for what. It can take weeks to rectify something like that. I do not believe that everything was on the up and up with the accounting. (No proof. Just a gut feel.) So that could play a factor.
So if Wheeling can find a way to drop to the 7th seed, the two teams would face one another. The sixth seed would have them facing a team with fewer points than them. Not unheard of at all. Oh well. I love the hockey playoffs. NHL, AHL, ECHL it does not matter. Playoff hockey is playoff hockey. Wheeling's run last season was amazing to me. I do not know if they have the same moxie in them to make the same run right now. The team has the distraction of the sale. (No excuse with Elmira doing so well, but still.)
Just wow about the bank account. I knew that the politicians had to have their fingers in the pot dirtying it. Things are going to get weirder before they get clearer.
