Add in extra bus service from the arenas when the game is out (block a few streets to make them transit only on game nights or something?) and you can do a good job of breaking up the crowds.

If the city had looked at how the Olympics prevented such things from happening (live viewings needed you to go through searches in LiveCity's and split people into manageable groups), they would have been much more successful after the Stanley Cup loss.
If people are willing enough to riot, they will, without any alcohol intake or not, IMO. Willing rioters from places like Surrey, Burnaby can just show up when the game is near an end and start causing havoc, and then you have a mob mentality. Unless you block people out from entering the city during the game, then maybe it's possible....

The cops could always just release a horde of skunks in DT. That ought to clear out the rioters.

You'd think all of the bars downtown would flip out at this.

so really not that big of a difference. Sure Surrey might have more of the 'thug' demographic, but you can't claim Vancouverites were innocent of the whole thing and put all the blame on the goons from the burbs.

They could put up the screens again but charge people $50 to enter to view. With a 100% discount for anyone who's from Vancouver/Burnaby/Richmond.

Yes, let's take stereotypes and put them into action!

What's wrong with West/North Vancouver?

Well that's no fun. Will still be there though my friend works in Downtown so if worse comes to worse I'll watch the game at his place.

Wow, this kind of stuff really pisses me off.

I didn't go downtown last year, and I usually avoid it like the plague.

But tell me what I can or can't do?

That pretty much all but guarantee's I'm going downtown this playoffs.

eat it, copper.

If the tradeoff for having a month of good times downtown is three blocks of burned buildings and property damage that is cleaned up in a morning, I make that tradeoff every time.

If we just shot all the rioters eventually there'd only be good people left.

If Gregor would have listened to the police recommendation that they needed a stronger security presence, none of this would have happened.

So because they can't prepare properly no one is allowed downtown? There was huge crowds throughout the playoffs but there was never a problem of any violence downtown until game 7 of the finals. So really this should only matter if the Canucks go to the finals again. Shouldn't affect the early rounds. Anyways it's frustrating that a small majority(that the police should have had a proper plan for) ruined it for the rest of us. It's also frustrating that the chief knows that his ass is on the line if something like this happens again and he is basically taking the easy way out.

There were 200,000 people that day and how many of them rioted? A few hundred? I'd hope they would have a plan this time around and not just expect people not to come downtown because they said so.

Pretty sure if I want to go downtown, I'm gonna go downtown.

edit: I don't particularly want to go downtown, but I will just to spite Jim Chu, who is a moron.

Seriously. Don't come downtown. I live down here, and I'd be more than happy if they just shut-off all incoming public transit.

Keep the trains and buses running out to get the commuters home, but shut-off drop-offs after like 6:30pm.

Then setup a bunch of DUI blocks around the entrances to the city for bozos driving in. Then you're limited to either sober people driving in, which is fine, or idiots willing to pay that much for a cab, and I can't imagine there is that many of those.
