is this the year...... when the LA Kings pass us in the standings?

due to our lack of good hockey i watched a bunch of other games. and the kings are looking like the earlie 90s red wings to me.

goalies:
they have something the wings never had. a superb young goalie team. i know some of you guys are high on osgood. but i never saw him as a good goalie. he was a mediocre behind a stonewall defense. even a ahl goalie could have his stats imo.

defense:
with doughty there is a huge defensive talent. not superb lately but he is still very young. could be a new lidstrom. with vojnov they have a rock solid even younger version of doughty. mixed with very good veterans they are denfensely the best team i think.
gaa 2.10 2nd best in the nhl. and they compensated the loss of jack johnson. impressive

offense:
the wings had yzerman and fedorov and the kings have with kopitar and richards 2 similar top center. stoll is their nr 3 center. thats what i call depth. in addition to that they have some very effective winger with brown, carter (maybe a real center but who cares when he scores as a winger), williams etc. so they have 3/4 real top winger. we dont even have one (maybe filp).

management:
i hear frequently that you cant improve your team via trades nowadays. well, thats more an excuse for the missing skills holland is showing since years. the kings has a mix of drafted players and they did trade for some. they give away 1st draft to improve the team. we gave our 1st away for quincey. holland is only a sad shell of his former managing skills. its maybe the age.
or is it a coincidence that we have every year a crappy roster what babcock has to turn into a hockey team? you cant praise babcock high enough for getting this success with this roster. i mean he has to choose 10 guys for 2 pplay lines. if you ask me we have only 4 guys they are ready for this duty. and when you are putting hudler and cleary in the pp lines you will end up with results we have now. its not magic or bad luck. its just missing quality.
and the thing we are lacking the most is speed. it is painful to watch the wings out there getting outskated every single time. next to datsyuk and flip there is no speed at all. helm is speedy but you could take his stick away and get the same results. and running into goalies is entertaining but you dont score with that.

if the kings can go on with this pace of improvement they will end up winning some cups for sure. i dont know about you but i am very impressed with this team.

LA could pass the Red Wings by virtue of the division rules, but I doubt they finish with more points. Even if the Wings only pick up an additional 5 points this year (2 wins and an OT/SO loss) out of 16 possible, LA would need to get 14 points out of 18 possible just to tie the Wings.

Ummm no.

Kings are not special at all.

Why do we care what the Kings do?

The Kings have been one of those teams that has been building and building. With the addition of Carter it seems like they are finally at the point where they can compete with anyone. I'm not a big Lomardi fan but the Jack Johnson trade has worked out very well for them. I agree that Voynov has stepped in nicely and eaten up Johnson's minutes without missing a step and he has a better plus/minus to boot. I'd really like to see a St. Louis-Los Angeles first round series, that would be pretty badass.

I really have a hard time imaginating that, did you watch yesterday's game against the NYR? It was a great playoff-like game.

I don't watch enough LAK games to even put in a response to this, but they do seem to be getting it together after acquiring Carter.

What? For most of the season they've been one of the league's most boring, defensive teams, to the point where even their fans have complained about it. The only teams that have scored less goals this year are Minnesota (duh) and Columbus (who are awful).

Hmm, I could have swore the thread title was:

"is this the year...... when the LA Kings pass us in the standings?"

I guess that's supposed to mean something other than what it actually says then?

They also don't have to play 3 of the other 4 best teams in the conference that often.

Kings have played the Jackets four times this season and so have the Wings.

Soooo Wings still have more points before playing their last two games against them. Kings are kind of in a garbage division atm.............soooo yeah. (relatively speaking to the Central)

Lets all applaud the Kings for finally not sucking and saying they are going to surpass the Wings based on 7-8 games of evidence.

Osgood sucks and was a product of the Wings system (haven't heard that one before)
Doughty could be the next Lidstrom?
Yzerman, Fedorov = Carter, Richards

That's pretty much all you need to read folks.

Agree with most of your criticisms of our current roster, but Kopitar and Richards are not even in the same statosphere as Yzerman and Feds.

Doughty still has a lot to prove.

Kopitar is a boss. Shame he has to play Darryl Sutter hockey.

if the Kings have 2 similar top centers to Yzerman and Fedorov,3-4 "real top wingers",and a "new Lidstrom" then why are they 28th in the NHL in goals?

I didn't watch it, but I assume the Kings' 1-0 shootout victory over the Blues was absolutely scintillating hockey.

Then honestly, you missed out....it actually was intense. You don't think a 0-0 game can be great hockey? That's sad.

90% of regular season 0-0 games are boring as hell

that game was entertaining. superb goalies on both sides.

i enjoyed it more then 90% of the red wing games. thats for sure.

and yes i know they are 28th in goal scoring. but what about goal scoring the last games since trade deadline?
in the last 30 games they are 2nd in power play goals in the league. can you say that about the wings?

so its easy to say they are more entertaining the last 30 games then the wings.

and yes, the kings passed us in the standings for now. i think they will end up in 3rd place.

so now powerplay goals are considered more exciting than other goals?
