Ryan Murray, Everett Silvertips, WHL: Defense (2012 NHL Draft)

Ryan Murray, L, Defense
6'1 200 lbs
Canada

Are there any videos of him just playing not right before a fight?

He's definitely a top ten pick but will he go top 5? top 3? top 2?

He's the best D in this draft and should go top 5.

I know for a fact he's gona be a top 6 for sure. Top 5 is probaly and top 3 it all depend who's drafting.

The draft should go;

1st. Yakupov
2nd. Grigorenko
3rd.Dumba or Murray

The thing is I could see Edmonton drafting a D at 2nd overall wich would be Dumba or Murray. Murray simply brings more stability to there core and he's ready for prime time. The thing is if Montreal end up with the 2nd overall then Grigorenko is pick by montreal since they need a top Center wich he is.

You never know what Edmonton is going to do. I think any team picking at 2nd overall takes Grigorenko unless Murray becomes Lidstrom-lite. Whichever team picking at 3rd overall has to choose between Dumba and Murray.

I think Murray has higher overall potential than any other defenseman in the draft.

I think they go with Grigorenko. For all the attention their skilled forwards get, Musil, Klefbom, Marincin, Petry, and Gernat is a pretty solid core group of D prospects. Not saying they don't need Murray, but if Grigorenko is the best player available in their eyes then they should take him.

Ryan Murray is a heckuva defenseman that brings a ton of intangibles to the table. But how those intangibles will equate at the pro level is the thing that have people unsure of what he is. He seems a bit undersized to be a pure shutdown player. Not sure if how his offense will translate to the pros.

Vision and hockey sense are two of his biggest attributes, something that Oilers head scout, Stu Macgregor grades highly on. I'm sure he's wrestling with these same questions as I am.

With Gernat, Klefbom and Marincin in the pipeline, I'm not sure the Oilers need another "good at everything but not great at anything" type defenders. What they will likely need is a dynamic gamebreaker on the backend. And that player would be Dumba. Even though Murray is likely better than all of the above, the Oilers need to trust the pieces they have drafted and start to surround them with pieces that fit.

Essentially, what I am saying is, the Oilers will be able to get more out of Dumba than they will out of Murray.

Future stud. Very safe and reliable (except against the Russians). Everett's season completely changed when he came back from his injury.

If Oilers draft third and Grigs isnt on the table then I take Murray. If we're picking second I'm taking Grigorenko, BPA 10 times out of 10.

Most NHL ready defenceman of the draft. If he goes to the right team, he could be counted on to play 14-15 minutes a night next year in the NHL.

Slick puck mover, amazing skater and pretty solid defensively.

He'll go top 5 for sure in the draft.

Named as a 2nd team all-star in the WHL's Western Conference.

Also named as the West's most sportsmanlike player.

You've probably watched him more than most RS, so tell me if I'm right on any of these assessments/comparisons:

- The Dman equivalent of Jordan Eberle.

- Duncan Keith-type Dman.

If either/both of these are apt, I will be very pleased to watch the Oil call his name @ #2.

Best of the West is a poll of players, management and broadcasters.

Interesting that Murray was voted 2cnd Best Stay at Home d-man, and 3rd hardest shot. Incredibly well rounded player to be sure. Also #1 Best skater, #1 pro prospect and #3 MVP to his team.

Here's your answer in post #39 (circa Dec 10, 2010):

Skates pretty well. Isn't overly physical, but can handle it when it comes.

Amazing vision. Great passer and sees guy's open that no one else does.

Great poise with the puck, especially on the PP. Great quarterback.

Good nose for the net as he likes to jump into the rush, or sneak down the back side on the PP to create holes and lanes for teammates.

An above average defender already and is only getting better. There were a few plays tonight where he was walked around by a Blades player, but that's going to happen sometimes with the younger blueliners.

But, the raw talent shows with this kid.

He won't make team Canada this go-round, but I would expect top 4 minutes on the team from him next year, he's that good.

Yes, comment on his offensive ability. I keep hearing that he's an excellent all-around d-man but likely won't be a 40+ point d-man at the NHL level. My gut says he may be the most dissapointing pick in the draft if he doesn't develop into Dan Hamhuis, which someone mentioned and I thought was a good comparable.

I saw him a couple times in person this season and Hamhuis was who I thought of.

He makes a lot of really strong, hard passes that some guys on his team can't handle. I saw him make some perfect cross ice, diagonal passes on the PP that NHL players bury but his teammates just whiffed on.

I never left with the special feeling about him as a top D-man though. For me the biggest thing missing is he doesn't control the pace of the game even though he's out there for over half of it. He does everything well and I do think he can step in and play in the NHL next season but I don't know that he'll ever be a true #1. I wish I'd seen him play on a better team.

Cerebral, patient with the puck, doesn't take bad penalties. That's how I'd describe Ebs. Seems like a number of qualities Murray possesses.

Yeah, I guess. I just don't understand comparing a FW to a D I guess.
