Generic QMJHL playoff discussion thread [Edit: 3rd rnd]

Round 3:

1 Saint John 2
8 Chicoutimi 1

6 Halifax 2
7 Rimouski 2

---------------------------------------------

Round 2:

1 Saint John 4
13 Baie-Comeau 0

5 Quebec 3
6 Halifax 4

2 Shawinigan 3
8 Chicoutimi 4

3 Blainville-Boisbriand 3
7 Rimouski 4

--------------------------------------------

Round 1:

1 Saint John 4
16 Cape Breton 0

2 Shawinigan 4
15 Rouyn-Noranda 0

3 Blainville-Boisbriand 4
14 Gatineau 0

4 Victoriaville 0
13 Baie-Comeau 4

5 Quebec 4
12 Drummondville 0

6 Halifax 4
11 Moncton 0

7 Rimouski 4
10 Val-d'Or 0

8 Chicoutimi 4
9 Acadie–Bathurst 2

Saint John and Shawi are fairly obvious for Round 1. Halifax vs Moncton is going to be a pretty interesting series, expecting it to be pretty close.

Nice!

Now for predictions.

Saint John over Cape-Breton in 4

Rouyn-Noranda over Shawinigan (maybe it's just us that they suck against, but Shawinigan isn't actually that good) in 7

Hull over Boisbriand in 6

Victo over Baie-Comeau in 5

Québec over Drummondville in 5

Halifax over Moncton in 6

Val-d'Or over Rimouski in 7

Chicoutimi over Bathurst in 6

I continue to be annoyed that the Huskies get Shawinigan because they were worse than us. Now, now we have to deal with the Armada.

Sigh... I was hoping that Victoriaville would win their division, and we'd be able to move up to 13th.

Anyone gonna watch the SNB vs Cape Breton game?

Edit: Watching. Commentators are licking so much boot it's hard to watch even as a Saint John fan. Feel bad for CB fans :/

As expected, Saint John's top lines trying too hard to make the pretty play instead of just getting pucks on net. Corbeil with 2GA on 2 shots :\

If you have eastlink or rogers you might get it on their local channel. Also, there's a pay to watch telus link on their respective sites I think. Dunno about any free streams tho

So far we've got just one competitive-looking series out of 8, and even that one is 2-0, albeit for the lower seed (Baie-Comeau over Victoriaville).

This 16-team playoff format has got to go. It's a waste of time for both the high and low seed teams. One upset isn't worth the seven blowouts.

But the issue is, for playoff trees, 16 works and 8 work, but 10/12/14 all don't....

So eight team playoff sees this:
SJ-CHI
SHA-RIM
BLB-HFX
VIC-QUE

Or basically what we anticipate to be the second round (minus Victo?)

Not a good start by Victo.

Under the old system, we'd be playing Val-d'Or right now, instead of Boisbriand.

I love games against Val-d'Or...

Let's bring back the old(-ish) divisions next year -

Hull, Val-d'Or, Rouyn-Noranda, wherever Boisbriand decides to play
Victoriaville, Drummondville, Shawinigan, Sherbrooke
Québec, Chicoutimi, Baie-Comeau, Rimouski
The Atlantic teams

and bring back the cross-over system.

Shorten the first round to 5 games from 7, play them on an aggressive schedule like the Halifax/Moncton series (4 games in the first 5 nights) and they're over with in the first week. A 12 team tree works then. The top 4 seeds get byes.

Or just scrap the first round completely and go to 8 teams. The gap between the upper & lower seeds is just too great in this league. Last year's first round was a complete bust as well, with again just one upset in the round (which itself was a sweep) and everything else over with in 5 or less.

Fat chance, I know. The owners won't give up those playoff dates. It's a miserable excuse for playoff hockey, though.

That Cape Breton/Rouyn-Noranda series is going to be awesome!

Or just go back to the old system!

As has been stated before, only having to play three rounds instead of four gives the QMJHL team(s) an unfair advantage in the Memorial Cup.

The other option is to have conferences. But that wouldn't change the matchups for the two 'top' teams.

I looked at the last couple years under the old system. You trade the first-round problem for a second-round problem once you reseed the remaining teams. You get a few competitive first-round series by essentially creating 'strong' groups and 'weak' groups and playing them off in R1. The winners then all get reseeded in R2, and the 'strong' winners tend to feast on the 'weak' winners.

I guess it just is what it is. The gap between the tops & bottoms in the Q leads itself to playoff massacres. Just a matter of what round they occur in. May as well get them done with in the first.

Why not a 13 team format? Cuts down on the amount of teams a bit.

Winners of West, East, ATL, recieve byes. Ten remaining teams get reseeded (1 vs. 10, 2 vs. 9 etc..) and that leaves 5 winners. The teams that received byes then match up against the 5 first round winners making 8, then get reseeded....

This was done before, just a thought on the topic of playoff formats..
