Spain Prospects 09/10

Teams like SAD Majadahonda or CHH Txuri Urdin played most of the season with a team based on Juniors because of financial troubles. Others like Aramón Jaca or FC Barcelona have their young players at U20/U18 leagues, against another Spanish and French based teams (teams near Spain like Narbonne, Bordeaux, Font Romeu or Anglet), so their stats are lower.

Goalie stats are not available. And the player stats are possibly not very accurate. 20% aprox. of the games are not recorded on the stats. Take it only as a reference. Only Regular Season, other competitions like Copa Federación (before the Regular Season), Copa del Rey (after the Regular Season) or Continental Cup (FC Barcelona) are not recorded.

Liga Nacional are only composed of 5 teams (Afer Gasteiz resigned at the start of the season because of financial troubles and Anglet Hormadi resigned because schedule problems with French matches). There is a lot of difference between top teams (Jaca and Puigcerdà) against the others. FC Barcelona don't invest so much money in Ice Hockey, and SAD Majadahonda and Txuri Urdin are in financial troubles.

Better Shooting Percentage: Einar Meyerson and Juan Gordo (50.00)
Goalie Stats: Bruno González (5 G - 87.21 SVS (150/172) - 4.39 GAA).

- Oriol Boronat played previously with the U20 team and after that, he went to the Spain Senior Team. Oriol is one of the best young players at Spain and one of the future leaders of Barcelona's Offensive with another prospects like Juan Muñoz and Einar Meyerson, and another players like Danilo Didkovsky, Mikael Boberg or Ramon Morer.

- Another good player was Javier García-Arias, one of the Juniors of SAD Majadahonda. Young offensive with Adrián Gonzalez and Gonzalo Ansa. Majadahonda recenty became the winner of the U18 Transpirenaic League. García-Arias scored two goals in the last game against Jaca. Majadahonda, despite the economic troubles, is doing a terrific job at lower competitions (U18, U13, U11, U9,...) and is one of the best teams producing young players to the Spanish National Team.

- The spanish goalie, Bruno Gonzalez, despite the lack of chances at Aramon Jaca, showed a great level at this competition. With Ander Alcaine (the starter with the U20 and Senior), Gonzalez is one of the best young goalies actually at Spain.

- Good showing of Spain U20 team. A lot of players of this team are also at the Spain's National team, like Juan Muñoz (one of the best forwards actually in Spain) or Alejandro Pedraz (arguably the best prospect outside Spain). Great showing of Ander Alcaine, despite the lack of playing at the Liga Nacional (injury). Pedraz, despite the fact that Muñoz passed him at the scorer table, he adopted a more "first pass" type of player and assited very well all the tournament.

- They played very well against Great Britain, a country with more ice hockey development and a great young team. OT loss, but great game of Juan Muñoz and Oscar Vázquez (SAD Majadahonda). In general, this was a very good tournament for Spain, and a great way to prepare the core of the Senior Team. Players like Alcaine, Muñoz, Pedraz, Boronat, Hernández or Betrán are a very important part of the success of the Spain National Team at World Championships at Mexico.

The Spanish Hasek

Ander Alcaine became the first Spanish-trained player to appear as a professional player in another league when he minded the net of Briançon Diables Rouges.

Alcaine immediately became the starting goalkeeper for the “Red Devils”. The team is coached by Canadian Luciano Basile, who was also Alcaine’s coach with the Spanish national team.

What do you expect from the upcoming 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division II Group A in Reykjavik?

I would like to go back to Division I. We know it is a difficult task, but I think we are able to do it. It is the first goal. I think it’s difficult for every team, because a World Championship is not like a regular season where you play 50 games and the best team normally finishes in first position. In such a championship there are only five games and everything can happen. I don't remember any championship I have been that was without surprises.

This is our man for sure!

Hockey is improving in Spain, Ander is an example of that. I'd love to see him in an European "major" league (let's say Germany, Switzerland...)
