If Pronger shows drastic improvement by July 1st...
Do you still target Suter if he is available? Having Pronger come back later in the season, with Suter's contract in the books, even with a cap increase, would spell disaster.
Or do you re-sign Carle as an insurance policy/ go after another UFA? That would probably be the safest option, even if you are unsure if Pronger will return.
Sorry, could a mod change the title to "If Pronger's health drastically improves by July 1st?" Thanks.
I wouldn't go after Suter even if we don't know if Pronger can come back. It's going to be a classic case of the winner's curse, IMO. Suter will be overpaid if he hits the open market, and the Flyers don't have the cap space to waste overpaying him.
As unpopular as it might be on here, I would actually re-sign Carle, if the price is right. 25 minutes a night, good for 40 pts a season. +7 this year. Somewhere in the range of 4 years @ 4.25-4.5 would be fair market value for him. Either trade Mez, or let Kubina go, then, if Pronger can somehow come back, you have
Carle Pronger
Coburn Timonen
Grossman Meszaros/Kubina
Very solid, veteran group.
Carle's not as bad as everyone makes him out to be IMO and I would resign him for the right price. But I'd like to lock up Grossmann first. Unsure if I'd want to resign Kubina.

I agree with this ! If some of the folks on this forum had their way with their knee jerk drama queen moments....Hartnell, Carley, Bryz,Mez,Lilja, Briere,Coburn etc, all would be out of here by now....Carle is not even close to being as bad as some on here "think" he is.He is just a little more offensive minded than most Defensemen and at times it bites em in the a$$.
Overrated...how? I'm genuinely curious what you don't like about his game.
Personally, he's one of the steadiest D-men I've seen out of the "newer gen" defensemen. He's not an offensive powerhouse by any means, but it's always seemed pretty obvious he helps calm down the defensive zone when he plays.

CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $36,627
I am aware that the above roster is extremely unrealistic.
Just posted this in the other thread but saw Eskin's tweets about Pronger and being upbeat. He is going to a doctor this week to see if he can do more rehab. That's excellent news there. Hopefully he can make a comeback, because him on this team next year could be extremely dangerous.
Damn completely missed the other thread pertaining to this news

I live here in Nashville so i watch enough of Suter to know he is a damn good D-man but he isn't elite like people make him out to be. Especially defensively. He isn't positionally great at times. He also plays with Weber most of the time. I don't think he can be that anchor on defense like a Pronger or a Chara. Weber always stood out more every time i watched Nashville and that's damn near every game. Not saying Suter sucks because he doesn't. But some people around here overrate him.
Better then Matt Carle? Hell yes. But the amount of money i've heard that would be thrown at him isn't worth it.
At this point I'd rather resign Carle if the price is right and hope for Weber becoming available.
Carle and Weber would be nearly as good as Carle and Pronger, or Suter and Weber.
I would honestly take Grossman over Carle at the same dollar figure. Grossman diving to block after the 2man PK just finished and the second penalty was ending was awesome.
(Not as awesome as Giroux's bunny-hop dive for the puck, but still great).

Yeah, let's rely on a 37 year old guy to be the only guy who can move the puck from the back-end.
This would be a terrible puck-moving D.
Let's keep Timonen, Carle, Coburn and Grossmann.
Possibly Meszaros and hope for either Weber or Suter.
Or for #20.
I really wish he would make a comeback but its very unlikely. Even so if I'm the Flyers I'm not going after Suter. He will cost way too much. I could live with Carle if he takes a home town discount (Coburn money?).
Everyone always wants homer to go and sign the big price player if we go and get suter or weber both will want big money and put us in cap hell with the new CBA coming..
Yeah, Carle is going to get overpaid too. But not as bad as Suter, who quite honestly is not a #1 shutdown defenseman from what I've seen. He's a very good NHL defenseman, but not elite IMO.

I agree. If Chris can make a full recovery that would be great!!! But even without him, I feel we do not need to break the bank and sign a 7 million dollar FA. Resign Grossmann and Kubina and Carle. With Kimmo, Mez and Coburn that is a solid group. Plus with the young players in the system doing decent that to should bode well. It was good to see Chris like that last night and maybe in the next three months or so we can get some better news about his future.

That is what Coburn and Mesz are supposed to do. I actually had to read your post three times to see if you were serious.
