That is beyond me....
How about because of his four injuries in just a year? Or the fact that he has missed more AHL/NHL games due to injuries than he has played in the NHL?

I still think he'll be qualified, and he'll sign a one year two-way deal. That is, if he doesn't come back late in the playoffs. If he does and proves himself there, he might get the one-way he's looking for.

Im no doctor, but I do think he's done for the year. If you look at the kids history he rarely beats the return prognosis.

Why would the Rangers qualify Zuccarello?

Quote:
It realistically appears that the only way Mats Zuccarello will continue his NHL career next season would be if the Rangers fail to qualify him on July 1, thus allowing the Norwegian to hit the open market where he might be able to attract a one-way offer as an unrestricted free agent.

Under terms of Article 10.2 (iii) of the CBA, the Rangers are required to offer the impending Zuccarello a two-way contract in order to retain his rights when his contract expires following the season. Itís hard to imagine the winger would sign that contract and risk playing for what would be relatively loose change in the AHL when compared with the money he would be able to command in Europe.

The Rangers could bump up the AHL money to $100,000. The ELC also has a cap on the AHL salary.

When it comes to the ankle injuries, I agree. Those could be of concern for the Rangers, as he had this injury twice before in Sweden and Norway.

The other two injuries are results of bad luck and unfortunate events, and have nothing to do with him being injury-prone. His hand fracture last year come after his hand got stuck in a camera hole in the boards (Chances for that happening again are pretty small if you ask me....), and this time it was a blocked shot. Zuke is not the player that blocks the most shots, and this was just unfortunate for him. PK players like Callahan and the defensemen are much more likely to get injured because of blocked shots than Zuccarello.

That said, I have always thought he would get offered a two way contract anyways. Bottom line is; Does Zuccarello want to stay in the NHL? If yes, he signs the contract. If no, he goes back to Europe where he knows the big clubs are waiting for him with big contract offers. If he goes back to SEL, I do not doubt he will be the highest paid player there.

I think he will sign a new offer. Next year will be different than the two first in many ways. First of all he has proved himself to be a player that could stick with the team. Second, next year he will be waiver-eligible, and will for sure be claimed by another team if sent down to the Whale.

And if he beats the return prognosis and the Rangers are still in the cup, will he make the line up or will the send him down to the Playoffs for the Whale (if they are still in)? Hard to say. I actually doubt that he will be in the PO-lineup. To come back after a long term injury being a little rusty to play these type of games where a single little mistake could be a disaster...?.... Time will show.

The catch-22 for Mats getting healthy during the playoffs, is that he comes in on a late round, meaning the Rangers would have to have played good hockey for them to get there, and then they prolly won't change a winning team.

That said, if they come to the conference finals (around where I think Mats will be healthy), and are down buy two games, I'm sure they will play him again. If not, I hope he gets permission to go to the WC, but I don't see that happening unless both Rangers AND whale are out of the playoffs.

I think he gets a decent offer from the Rangers. Call it a gut feeling.

Can the Rangers not qualify him but have a handshake agreement to sign him again as a UFA?

For the sake of clarity, Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist has legendary status in the club after seven wonderful seasons, and is considered one of the world's best goalkeepers.
Zuc was just joking around.

Didn't Zuccarello fracture his wrist last season in the AHL?

If you read what it says right under the headline, its an obvious joke.

"Mats Zuccarello crushes bitterness with humor after the injury that probably have ended the season"

Yep, but the other one. He got his hand stuck in one of the camera holes in the glass in the corner, haha. Guy is unlucky as can be!

Took it out of context. Only saw what was posted, posted, then read the article. My bad.

+ Zuccarello agent Erik Ryman told TV2 that Zuccarello, requiring surgery. After the Hockey Magazine has learned this will happen tomorrow, but the person himself will not comment on it. It's not all I can talk about, he says to Hockey Magazine on Sunday evening.

Better resign MZA.

Honestly, after seeing some of the trash we've dressed in the bottom 6, I can't fathom he's not on our third line to start next season.

Jim Ramsay, head Rangers trainer. The poster was making a Lord of the Rings Reference. A very clever one.
