Wow, that's actually quite terrifying when you think about how many small bumps to the head happen in a game/season. Is there any reason why a small hit like that would do so much damage? Did he have a prior brain condition they were unaware of?
No, as concussion guru Dr. Karen Johnston says it is purely individual.
The problem in treating concussions has been that, unlike a broken leg, the injury was largely undetectable by MRIs and CT scans. “We used to think that concussions affected the structure of the brain,” says Johnston. “But now we know that a concussion disrupts the way a brain works, not the way it is put together.” As such, concussions can only be properly evaluated over time through careful observation of the symptoms and their gradual dissipation.
Symptoms often are aggravated hours or days after the event itself and manifest themselves in ways that go largely ignored. Athletes who have sustained a blow to the head (or body) will often attribute their listlessness, irritability and problems sleeping to something else, like a flu bug, rather than a blow to the head they absorbed three days ago.
I have heard her speak at a symposium years back and she describes what set her on the path to try to understand concussions. She was riding a bike on a trail and took a spill suffering a whiplash injury - not a direct head blow but over the following days became disoriented, emotional, with severe headaches and unable to think clearly. The symptoms fortunately cleared up and she found her area of research.
When I was playing college hockey (mid-1970's) I got clocked (in an all-star game of all things). I was playing D and was with an unfamiliar partner. We worked a give and go and I headed up the middle to take a return pass, it was behind me, I reached back and wham - a shoulder right to the jaw. Knocked me cold. According to other players I dropped to the ice and my head bounced pretty good. After I came around with a dose of smelling salts, I wobbily skated to the wrong bench. I sat out a couple of shifts and then went back at it - or so I am told as I have absolutely no memory of completing the game or the rest of that night. I had brutal migraines for about a week and light sensitivity. I had to get a dispensation to delay a couple of mid-terms. In about a month all was back to normal.
I have seen clients completed debilitated with PCS from what seemed a minor whiplash. There is just no way to tell how a concussion will resolve or what the time frame may be.
Rome will be out 7-10 days, as per Farhan Lalji of TSN.

Really hope the no update has to do with hiding good news from the NHL. If he is out for the rest of the playoffs its going to suck. I want the hawks in the 2nd round. Anyone else?

I want the Hawks as soon as possible, hopefully with Toews in the lineup!
Last thing i heard was skating but that was a while ago. Odds are he will get a conditioning trip soon and return in game 1 of the playoff (if AV puts him in the line-up). Pretty sure he's all heal'd up by now.
Too bad he needs to wait until playoffs. Would be nice to have him get a game in to shake the rust off a bit. I personally think he should suit up though. With Tanev getting better, i actually like our D provided they play well, which is not a given i realize.
It wouldn't necessarily surprise me if he isn't in the lineup for game 1 though, hard to gauge what AV will do from one game to the next.

Actually it was only a week ago where it was reported he was put through a "rigorous skate".
Hopefully there were no setbacks. A Ballard-Tanev pairing is what we need on our 3rd pairing going into the playoffs.
I know it sucks that there is no news and I know it's hard but patience is key here or it will just eat you up inside.
I truly hate that he's out of the game. It isn't the same when one of the league's best players is out.
I do wonder if guys like Sid and Bergeron have reached out.
Stay strong!
I know it sucks but it does get better as cliche as that sounds.
I think that in his absence Henrik has really upped his level, he's put up 3 points in the 2 games Daniel was out. He also was getting a bit chippy too, which is nice to see.
The fact Bergeron doesn't seem to have suffered a long-term detriment from his concussion is definitely positive and hopefully Daniel can do the same.
But it does really seem like theye winning it for Danny right now.
