Is he good? Maybe he would take over.

He was a little generic but ok. Not remarkable or particularly memorable though.

I think Sam USED to be great. I think the game has started to pass him by. He spends more than half of the game now talking about minutia. Many times he is going on some diatribe, and a goal is scored. That is REALLY annoying.

How can anyone be this against Gianone at this point? He's gotten worlds better since he started.

His voice is more suited for interviews, not pbp.

Noone will ever be Sam, but Kenny would be a solid replacement.

Gianone isn't bad, but that's exactly it. He does alright when he fills in for Sam, but I couldn't listen to him all the time.

Kenny is a play-by-play man. Not an analyst. At this point, I would seriously entertain the idea of making the radio team the TV team. At the very least, Dave should replace Joe.

kenny is my friends uncle so i know hes a real good guy. I don't know why this is even being brought up. These guys go until they are in their 80s (vin scully anybody? bob murphy? RALPH KINER?) Sam will go until he can't do it anymore, and this won't be an issue for probably another ten years.

The problem for me is Michelletti. He's making me not want to listen to the broadcast. Sam is fine, though I would also prefer Howie or Kenny. Maloney is a bit rough on the edges, but he brings excitement, and decent analysis. I assume Michelletti would be far more honest if he didn't have Dolan looking over his shoulder - I've heard him on other radio programs - but at best he offers background noise. There are plenty of good analysts out there, why MSG and the NHL network need to corner the market on the lamest, most generic ones, I don't know. Better than NBC I suppose.

How about Gary Thorne? Haha.

I honestly would rather jump off the Empire State building and catch my eyelid on a nail, than listen to him. His goal call is awful and obnoxious. I freaking hate hockey announcers who think just because the typical goal call is "he shoots and scores!" that they need to drag that word "scores" out as long as they can, or scream it so loud that it scrapes a person's raw nerves, or both. He SUCKS.

Kenny would be the smart choice if you're looking or longevity, as he is still pretty young. Howie? Not sure. It depends on how he ages, he ain't a spring chicken anymore either.

Again, Don would be a great choice, but I don't see it happening.

i hate guys like Doc that think they're the main attraction

just tell me which dude has the puck and who passed it to him...i dont want know where he went to high school, what his favorite team was growing up, and how many adjectives you can use to describe the intensity with which he made the play

i also hate announcers that sound like fran drescher

See...I love Doc. And I love all those stories and adjectives. He is so articulate but without being overbearing or obnoxious. I love Sam, but to me, he is the best broadcaster in the business as far as I'm concerned.

That's where we disagree. I think Doc goes WAY over the line of overbearing and obnoxious. I love when announcers are knowledgeable, but not when they're discussing how Marty waffleboarded the SHAAAAAAAAAAWT away after it bounced off of his paraphernalia.

Like I've always said, I have no problem with Doc- smart guy, great hockey mind, very nice- I just don't like him as a commentator at all.

Scully, Murphy, and Kiner? You do realize that once they passed the age of 60 or so, they primarily stuck to announcing baseball. (And in Scully's case, maybe some golf and tennis as well.) Hockey pbp is, shall we say, a bit more faster and demanding than announcing those other sports.

I love Sam too. But he has those days when he just miscalls the action or mis-IDs players (even the Ranger guys!) left and right. His performance has definitely slipped. And if the slide continues, then this will eventually become an issue that MSG Network can't ignore.

Doc mixed up players the entire game when we played the Devs on NBC. Yet apparently he's the best in the business.

Sam still has a lot of velocity left to lose on his fastball before he has to hang 'em up.

Poach Gary Thorne from whatever he's doing.

I want to relive my NHL2Night teenage life!!!

Seriously though, Thorne is great, I don't know what he's currently up to, but the man is an incredible broadcaster. He's great at baseball too. Pisses me off that Joe Buck is the voice of baseball. And i'm kind of tired of Doc Emerick to be honest.

With that said, i think Sam has 3-5 years in him. Depends on his health and family. Even if he did leave i'd love for him to pop in every now and again like Rizzuto did for the Yankees. Maybe he could beat the 2 1/2 period traffic home.

Doc screws up quite a bit, true. But I guess I cut him a bit more slack since he's doing national broadcasts, with different teams every night.

The amazing doc managed to confuse Boyle and Zuc...there's only about a 3 foot difference between the two

that was impressively stupid for a guy that tries so hard to sound smart
