that's fair play, props to him. Unfourtunately though, if someone in a big european league did this, he'd be hated by fans and benched by the coach.
Not a chance that would be the result, IMO. Most fans would praise him (and enjoy being able to take the moral high ground), and the coach could not publicly blame him (by benching him) due to media pressure. He would have the manager yell at him behind closed doors, however. I don't think there's much of a chance it would happen at that level, though. Players at that level have learned to be too professional and focus on doing their job instead of the ref's.
closest thing I saw was a few years back in one of the U17/U19 Euros (love watching those ) where the ref made a mistake and gave a team a corner which clearly wasn't. The team taking the corner played it short and played it out for a goal kick...of course this isn't the same extent of purposely missing a PK but still good fair play

I can remember an English lower league team scoring under dubious circumstances and deliberately gifting their opponents an immediate equaliser to atone. This was in the last decade-anyone remember the exact details?
Funny to think that the penalty kick rule was introduced into football quite late-after the FA Cup, Football League and international football were already underway. The famous amateur club Corinthians objected to the rule and intentionally missed penalties in protest.
Thanks for the links. As it happens, I managed to track down a written report for the game I was thinking of: Yeovil Town v Plymouth Argyle in the 2004 League Cup.
I think you're thinking of Leicester against Nottingham right?
That was a weird one, the original game got called of at half time with Forest winning 1-0, after a Leicester player had a heart attack in the changing rooms.
In the replay Leicester let the Forest keeper score straight from kick off so that it was 'fair'
it happened in Iran too a few days ago, made the news in Croatia because Zlatko Kranjcar is a coach at one of their clubs.
The team in yellow was returning the ball to the blue team when an injury occured, but one of the strikers on team yellow continued to play hard and won a penalty

Kranjčar told the PK taker to miss the penalty on purpose, too bad the goalie that made the faul got a red card.
