Dubinsky at the net

Why does Duby never go to the net? With or without the puck he's at his best there. He has an inconsistent but good perimeter shot and pass but to me Dubinsky is simply a) too strong and fast to easily handle if he drives to the net with puck and b) too strong and and annoying to easily handle if he gets in the crease and tries to screen, deflect and distract.

I'd especially like to see him and others actually try to sneak in a wraparound goal instead of trying the pass through traffic when shuffling it about behind the net for ages.

I came in here expecting a meticulously crafted play on "Casey at the Bat."

OT but still related; Was Dubi benched against Toronto? I fell asleep during the game, but read something about it. True or false?

Dubinsky is someone who is in his 5th season and still doesnt know the type of player he is. Thats partly on the coaching, but mostly on him.

Behind the Bench a few weeks ago, Tortorella was talking about how they've been "trying like hell" all year to get him to go to the net and "that's what he's supposed to do, which he doesn't do."

So I'd put it more on Dubinsky than anyone else.

Sounds like Torts threw him under the bus a little bit.

Because he's too busy trying to act like Gretzky behind the net.

He was ruined watching Jagr when he first came up. I scream all the time to stop going for the Jagr skate with his butt sticking out behind the net

He doesn't move his feet nearly enough.

He hits the blue line and puts on the breaks.

Dubi's main interest seems to be a back hand, wraparound.

I'm pretty sure Dubinsky doesn't know where the net is most of the time.

You could call it that I guess, but it seems more to me like frustration at Dubinsky apparently just not doing what they apparently try very hard to get him to do, which led directly to a goal against, at least in the play Tortorella was describing at the time.

This is one of my big issues with him. He's been a little better lately but still isn't active enough.

Hockeys different nowadays. The reason why Dubinsky takes the puck behind the net so much is because teams collapse 4 or 5 players below the dots and stay in a tight box. It's hockey 101 nowadays. Every camp, instructional league etc teaches it. Take away the high-risk scoring chances, and take away the shooting lanes from the point. It's a win-win situation for the defense.

"Going to the net" is a term used primarily for on the rush. Players are also scared of goalie interference penalties. They cant even stop a foot above the crease because the slightest nudge flops the goalie and its a penalty.

Dubi would have been a 40-goal scorer in 1987. Maybe Boyle too.

Watch other games from around every league. Players do the "wraparound backhand" shot or centering feed off the cycle or rush all the time.

Shame. Soon the NHL is going to make an NBA-style "illegal defense" box where you cant stack four or five in the box from the dots to the slot.

I wouldn't mind seeing him go, I guess. Holding out on us twice, not showing much this season, 4 million dollar cap hit. It just sucks because you know he can play.

Agreed. Especially with Kreider coming up and being a cheaper player than Dubinsky I don't really see a spot for him. He'll be used as trade bait but I'm curious to see what we can get for them.

I think if he shows up in the playoffs (which would be HUGE) he'll be here next year; otherwise, he may be gone by draft day...

Torts and Duby are not on the same page. Torts made some comments after the Leafs game about Brandon needing to be better. Same comments he made after the Canes game. He benched him in Carolina. He sat him for the rest of the period on Saturday. Dubinsky sees 40 seconds on the 2nd PP unit. Limited time on the PK. It takes an injury to get him in the top 6 forward rotation. The free agent market stinks this summer. Dubinsky is a good player. Sather will get a good return for Dubinsky.

Not that they are on the same level, but this is exactly how the preception was of him and Vinnie L.

Dubi did everything and was out there in all the biggest situations every single time last year. I expect the shortsightedness from a lot of posters, but not from you. He's having a bad year. That being said, he has shown signs of life lately. He missed a stupid pinch by Bickel in the last game, which put him in the doghouse but it's not like he did absolutely nothing at all the whole time. He scored that game. He's looked good lately. And he was our best player all of last year.

We'll give him a chance to come in next year and show what he's made of. We didn't deal gabby after last year. Down years are part of the game. It's how you respond. Dubi's work ethic and attitude towards the game hasn't ever seriously been questioned, he's not out of shape or being a bad guy in the locker room. He's been a great player for us until this year as evidenced in his recent contract. He'll bounce back, and he'll do it as a Ranger. We're not going to trade him just so the fanbase has to find a new scapegoat.
