I think it had a lot to do with Stafford getting big minutes on the PK, thus Ruff unable to throw the Ennis line out there after we kill off the Caps PP.

Great: Stafford is a completely different player with Ennis and Foligno. I don't know if the physical pressure if off because of Marcus or because he is away from Roy but he looks like a different man.

Bad: You have to look very deep at a game like this to find something bad but I didn't like that they half ran Miller and that Dennis Wideman was taking liberties all game especially with Roy. I know I'm in the minority but we need to run a goalie to stop this because it won't go away until we do. Take your pick and send McCormick/Kaleta/Tropp/Turnbull, I don't care but we need to take out a goalie out to protect ours.

Ugly: Injuries of course

Pittsburgh has back-to-backs Thurs vs Isles and Friday vs us. So who knows how they'll play their goaltenders.

edit: that's one of the good things about Leopold. He may have the occasional brain fart, but he can eat a lot of minutes if you need him to.
Very true. If Sekera can stay in the lineup, Ehrhoff's absence will certainly hurt, but not as much as if we still had Grags...

Wow - huge statement game, indeed.

Almost everyone brought their A games tonight.

Poms was incredible. That shortie was a classic.

Stafford looks practically unstoppable recently. I love that FES line. There was a shift where they were cycling for about a minute, including Ennis and Staff skating in a tight circle around each other passing it back and forth to each other in close quarters. That was incredible. Foligno is exactly what this team was missing.

Roy and Poms on the PK - stellar.

Miller with 44 saves and making it look really easy.

Hodgson looked great again. His effort to split the D on Vanek's goal was a prime-time play.

The only remotely ugly thing is Ehrhoff. That could hurt us big time. Hope McNasty is ready to roll.

The Panthers winning that division is one of the top story lines in the NHL. That's pretty nuts, but it's a testament to Dale Tallon and our old friend Kevin Dineen!

It's good to see a winner back in South Florida.

G: The only sound to be heard in the Verizon Center with 14 seconds left was a "Let's Go Buffalo!" chant.

B: Being asked to not lean forward in my seat by a Caps fan. Seriously? Not, "Please don't stand," but "Lean back please, you're blocking my view."

U: Same Caps fan in B cheering the Sabres' injuries, and then being one of the first in my section to leave early.

Really can't be stated enough. Even if he didn't have the shortie...he was a beast defensively. Especially on the PK. But damn, he was in perfect position on every shift, made smart decisions with the puck all night long (and that showed on the goal--slowing up to set up the 2-on-1, then firing it home), the captain showed up in the most important game of the year. Can't ask for anything more than that.

Pommers has got to be the one of the most self-effacing guys in the NHL. Dude never takes credit for what he does. Even on winning the puck battle against OV and potting the shortie he deflects credit.

e:Sorry, listening to some of the post game stuff.

After Poms scored, he turned around raised his arms and the only thought I had was him thinking "Come hug your Captain!!!"

If we lost in regulation tonight, I would be worried. Those are good teams for sure, and they are all still playing for something. Well maybe not Boston, so much. We can beat good teams. We can even beat great teams. We can certainly win 2 or 3 of those games, and I expect them to do just that. There's no way you work this hard for something and then give up before sealing the deal.

Saw some of the NYI/PIT highlights tonight and Fleury got hit in the head via his defeseman's knee in the 2nd and Thiessan came out for the 3rd. Could be a concussion situation for all we know, but it didn't look good. Could get the rook for the game this weekend

While it might be a break for us, that would suck for the Pens if he is concussed. Finally got Crosby back, looking like the beast of the East, and then Fleury goes out? Yikes. He's more important to their success than a lot of people realize.

e: Nvm, just checked the Pens board, and it looks like Fleury wasn't pulled for health reasons.

The Awesome:
Ryan ****ing Miller. Even when he's having this ridiculous stretch, he mostly seems to just get a "Miller was solid" mention. 44 saves in a must win game? Even despite the goal production on our end, that is downright spectacular, not to mention his Vezina caliber #s since the All Star Break (and I am not at all implying he's in the Vezina discussion)
Clawing their way back from least in the East to sole possession of 8th place. I'll obviously be disappointed if we don't make the playoffs but this stretch has been insane and is a great way to start building an "identity" (even though I generally dislike that nebulous term). No need to blow anything up next year, just play the whole god damn season like this (not just half) and they should be fine

The also Awesome:
FES is nuts
Keep VHT and LRP, Ruff. Don't you dare try putting VRP back together
When Sekera is on, he is USDA certified prime

The Dammit:
'Hoff. Hope to hell he's not out too long

When is Pominville ever frustrating?

Roy? Yup. Vanek? You got it. Stafford? Absolutely.

But Pominville?

Genuine curiosity. If you'd care to elaborate, please do.

I came streaking up the wing to answer this question but blasted it 5 feet high and wide .

Yeah, the pointless slap shot from the right wing just over the blue line. Thats all I can think of too, though.

That's a lame reason. If anything, it'd be for streaking down the wing and blasting it into the goalie's crest.

Seriously, though. He's a no-nonsense player that plays an honest two-way game. I've never been a huge Pominville fan, but he's one of only a few players on the team that I have never grown frustrated with.

He doesn't take bad penalties.
He's the most durable handsome player on the team.
He doesn't shy away from physical stuff.
He's a glue guy.

Etc etc
